:-D I am sitting here looking at a Windows XP screen.

But I have a couple of questions that I hope you can answer: They had me use the reinstall cd that I have to do a repair install over my xp. But it has been installing nework files for way longer than the 32 minutes it suggested. Is there a way for me to "wake it up" to see if it is still working or if it is stuck?

When it is done I will have SP1a on here. Do I need to upgrade that to a SP 3 before I finish what we were doing or finish first? Or will I need to do things completely different?

Thanks again for all of your help!!!

Windows is not very good at telling how long something will take. It's a long running joke.

It can take hours sometimes even when it says there's 15 minutes left.

LOL....That's why I never trust windows, however, it's now been 10 hours and this screen still says 32 minutes. :-) It's just hard to tell since windows has a running advertisment. Nothing else is moving.

Hmm.. I don't know what to tell you as this isn't my expertise. I don't think there's any way to exit out of the install procedures and if you force your computer to shut down I don't know what will happen when you try to boot up again.

If you cannot boot into Windows you will have to perform the repair again.

Hey Again!!

I finally have the desktop up. It's still trying to sort through things and get them all where it thinks that they should be. In the morning I'm planning on doing the service pack updates so I can get on the internet with that computer.

What do you need to see from me? Do you want to see the results from the Malwarebytes and the OTS? Or do you want to just start again?

Thanks again for all of your time and all of your help!! I've definitely learned a lot.

I'm glad to hear that. An OTS Quick Scan would be just fine. Let me know if you run into any trouble with the computer.

It's too bad that all that happened right after we had gotten you cleaned up.

OTS Quick Scan log:

This computer is acting really squirrel-ly. I don't know if it is from doing the repair install or from something else.

I've also gotten a pop-up box "Windows Installer" that is trying to install something. I just don't know what that something is. And it pops up every 15 minutes or so.

I've also tried to put the windows firewall up until I can download one but it won't let me.

You should let the Windows Installer install what it needs to to get rid of those annoying popups.

STEP 1

Run OTS

  • Under the Paste Fix Here box on the right, paste in the contents of following code box

Code:
[Unregister Dlls]
[Registry - Safe List]
< BHO's [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE] > -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\
YN -> {af97ada2-b821-477e-9940-f17367775583} [HKLM] -> Reg Error: Key error. [Reg Error: Key error.]
YN -> {EE02B99B-1D55-48bc-B8DB-649A42CE45F6} [HKLM] -> Reg Error: Key error. [Reg Error: Key error.]
< Run [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\] > -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

< AppInit_DLLs [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE] > -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\AppInit_DLLs
*AppInit_DLLs* -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\AppInit_Dlls
YY -> c:\windows\system32\zuragiwu.dll -> C:\WINDOWS\System32\zuragiwu.dll
< AppInit_DLLs [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE] > -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\AppInit_DLLs
< SSODL [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE] > -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ShellServiceObjectDelayLoad
YN -> "{bec00baf-1327-4f04-bc76-f0787fffed0f}" [HKLM] -> C:\WINDOWS\System32\zuragiwu.dll [kokebosut]
< SharedTaskScheduler [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE] > -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\SharedTaskScheduler
YN -> "{bec00baf-1327-4f04-bc76-f0787fffed0f}" [HKLM] -> C:\WINDOWS\System32\zuragiwu.dll [jugezatag]
[Custom Items]
:files
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows]
"AppInit_Dlls"=""
:end
[Empty Temp Folders]
[Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • This will create a log in C:\_OTS\MovedFiles\<date>_<time>.txt where date and time are those of when the fix was run. Open it from there if it does not appear automatically on reboot. Please copy and paste or attach the contents of that file here.

Note: You may receive some errors while running the fix. Just press Ok and the fix should continue normally.
If it seems to get stuck, give it some time. It's probably still working.

STEP 2

Run MalwareBytes AntiMalware.

  • Update it by clicking on the Update tab and then on the Button. Make sure you update it so that the same problem we had is not repeated
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan. Scan all of your harddrives.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

STEP 3

Run OTS again and click on the Quick Scan button at the top. Attach the results of this scan in your next reply.

Okay, here's the OTS scan results. No errors and it went pretty quick.

Taking a deep breath and going to the Malwarebytes scan.

The Windows firewall will at times disable itself when it detects one already installed. Trend Micro has a firewall component and theres evidence in the log that that's what you're using.

Are there any other symptoms?

STEP 1

Run OTS

  • Under the Paste Fix Here box on the right, paste in the contents of following code box

Code:
[Unregister Dlls]
[Registry - Safe List]
< Run [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\] > -> HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
YN -> "rkrk" -> C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\rkrk\rkrkm.exe [C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\rkrk\rkrkm.exe]
YN -> "Sonic RecordNow!" -> []
< Downloaded Program Files > -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Code Store Database\Distribution Units\
YN -> {8A0019EB-51FA-4AE5-A40B-C0496BBFC739} [HKLM] -> Reg Error: Value error. [Reg Error: Key error.]
YN -> {CEDDF50D-9FA7-41A8-BCD0-6350D1ED2306} [HKLM] -> Reg Error: Value error. [Reg Error: Key error.]
[Custom Items]
:files
C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\rkrk
:end
[Empty Temp Folders]
[ClearAllRestorePoints]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • This will create a log in C:\_OTS\MovedFiles\<date>_<time>.txt where date and time are those of when the fix was run. Open it from there if it does not appear automatically on reboot. Please copy and paste or attach the contents of that file here.

Note: You may receive some errors while running the fix. Just press Ok and the fix should continue normally.
If it seems to get stuck, give it some time. It's probably still working.

STEP 2

I want to run a full scan of your system now. This will take a while but it's well worth it as it can often find things all other scans will miss. You might want to wait until you have time for the next steps.

Before we do, I need you to update Internet Explorer to IE8. Even if you don't use it, we need to have it updated as its components are deeply connected with Windows itself.

Please go here to download the installer:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/

STEP 3

The online scanner uses Java, so I will need you to download and install the latest version for that.

Please go here to download the installer:

http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp

Reboot your machine when that's done.

STEP 4

Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, visit Kaspersky Online Scanner

1. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.

2. To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan. Click HERE to see how to disable the most common antivirus programs.

3. Click Run at the Security prompt.

The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.

Please be patient as this can take quite a long time to download.
  • Once the update is complete, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, adware, dialers, and other riskware
    • Archives
    • E-mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View report... at the bottom.
  • Click the Save report... button.

  • Change the Files of type dropdown box to Text file (.txt) and name the file KasReport.txt to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply

Good The scan will take from 1 - 5 hours on most systems but it can take even longer.

I have had the devil of a time with Kaspersky. I have been trying for a week to run that scan. It doesn't play well with Firefox. It would get to about 20% and stall. Finally, yesterday, I got the bright idea of using IE. I got to 96% then stalled. I started it this morning again and 7 hours later, it completed successfully!!! Yahoo. BUT....it won't give me an option to save the report. The "Save Report" option is grayed out.

Is there another way to get this report?
(I don't know why I get al of the weird problems.)

Thanks again for all of your help.....and
Happy Thanksgiving!!
