Hi dwilson21,

Please perform the following.

Scan with SystemLook

Please download SystemLook by jpshortstuff from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Link 1 | Link 2
  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run the tool.
  • Copy the contents of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    Code:
    :reg
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters /s

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please attach the log to your next reply via the Go Advanced button.

Note: The log can be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

WildTangent removal

To ensure WildTangent has been thoroughly removed, it would be advisable to download the removal tool from here.
Just double-click the file WTRemover.exe to run the tool and delete it after it is finished.

Reset SP3 Firewall

Click on Start, Click Run... and copy/paste or type the following into the Open: box and click OK
Code:
firewall.cpl
Click on the Advanced tab the click the Restore Defaults button near the bottom. At the prompt click on Yes, then click OK

Now click on the General tab and select Off (not recommended), click OK.

Note: No need for it to be active after the reset because you have the McAfee Personal Firewall active.

Reset Router Settings

Open your browser and type this into the address bar: 192.168.1.1 and press enter.

This should load your router settings page. There should be an option somewhere to "Reset the Router to factory settings" or something similar. There should also be an option to restart the router but that is not what we want here. Once you have reset the router to factory settings, create a new admin password to protect the settings from being changed.
Note: Most internet service providers use DHCP to automatically configure the connection. If your ISP has provided you with specific settings, you will need to have these settings available to re-enter manually to establish your internet connection.

Let me know if resetting router settings made a difference in the redirects and please post a new RSIT log as well along with the attached systemlook.txt.

Hello dwilson21,

More free space on the hard drive would still be helpful. Are there any unused data files (pics, docs, music, etc.) you can backup and delete?
You can run TFC again as I posted here to free up a little.

ComboFix

Let's continue with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and a guide for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Please ensure you read the guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

NOTE: The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. This is important! Combofix will not perform correctly otherwise. If you are unable to disable McAfee SecurityCenter do not continue and post back. I will then try to walk you through disabling McAfee SecurityCenter.
A guide to do this can be found here.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.
**IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop**

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may cause to your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

That seems to have fixed the problem. I clicked on about 20 different Google links and there were no redirects. Thank you for the help. Could you tell from all the logs what was causing the problem?

Hi dwilson21,

In answer to your query, the redirect was caused by an infected driver which is responsible for managing Windows' use of the TCP/IP protocols (the "rules" for communication on the internet). It wasn't in any of the logs I asked for before hand. I wanted to rule out possibilities before using Combofix. Combofix is very powerful and it's misuse can cause major problems. Thanks for your patience.

Delete Files and Folders

In Explorer (right-click Start, left-click Explore), navigate to and delete the following folders

c:\documents and settings\Laura\Local Settings\Application Data\xfgsbp
c:\documents and settings\Laura\Local Settings\Application Data\grnvpj

Afterward, Empty the Recycle Bin.

ESET Online Scan

Note: You will need to disable your Anti-Virus, instructions can be found here.

  • Please go here then click on:
  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on:
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on:
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on:
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

Please include the ESET log, a new HijackThis log and information on how the computer is running in your next reply.

Hi dwilson21,

The item ESET found is in the Combofix quarantine and will be deleted when we uninstall Combofix. Otherwise, looking good. A few more tasks to go.

Please delete Systemlook and the GMER program (randomly named .exe file) from your desktop.

Update Java

Older versions of Java have vulnerabilities that may be exploited by malware.
Please follow the steps below to update the Java Runtime Enviornment

Remove older version(s):

  • Click Start, click Run...
  • Type appwiz.cpl and click OK
  • For each of the Java installations listed below, highlight them in the list and click Remove

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    Java(TM) 6 Update 11

  • Click here to download JavaRa and save it to your desktop
  • Extract JavaRa.zip to your Desktop
  • Double-click JavaRa.exe to start JavaRa
  • Choose language in the drop-down menu, then click Select
  • In the new JavaRa window click Remove Older Versions to remove leftovers from uninstalls
  • Click Yes in the dialog box that pops up to uninstall
  • Close all browser windows (you will get a warning from JavaRa)
  • Click OK in the dialog box that pops up to open the log. Close the log. It is saved in the root of the windows drive (i.e. C:\)

Download and install newest version:

  • Click here to visit Sun Java download page
  • Scroll down the page a bit and click under
  • Select your platform and agree to the license agreement (after having read it, of course) by clicking the checkbox. Click Continue.
  • Click the link (jre-6u17-windows-i586-p.exe) under Available Files and download the offline installer to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running, including web browsers.
  • From your desktop, double-click on the download to install the newest version.
  • Reboot your computer.

Adobe Reader

Adobe Reader is out of date. Older versions have security vulnerabilities and you should update it. Please download and install the newest version from http://get.adobe.com/reader/.
After installing the newest version, uninstall Adobe Reader 7.0.8 through Add or Remove Programs.

HijackThis

Start HijackThis and select Do a system scan only
Place a check next to the lines listed below and Close all windows except for HijackThis
Click Fix checked:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (reboot)] "C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe" /runcleanupscript
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

Reboot the computer.

After the above has been completed, please post a new HijackThis log as a final check.

I followed all of your instructions. The only issue was with uninstalling Adobe Reader 7.0.8. After installing the newer version, I couldn't find version 7.0.8. Maybe it automatically uninstalled it when I downloaded the newer version. Here is the HighjackThis log:

I still have Combofix, RSIT, and TFC on my desktop. Can I delete these programs now or is there more to do? Thanks for all your help.

Hi dwilson21,

Quote:
Thanks for all your help.
Your very welcome. I'm glad I could be of assistance.

You can delete TFC and RSIT as well as the rsit folder located at C:\rsit.

ComboFix needs to be uninstalled.

Uninstall ComboFix

Click Start, click Run..., copy the below bolded text and paste it in the Open: box and click OK.

ComboFix /Uninstall

ComboFix will uninstall and clean up after itself.

Your logs are clean!

Implementing the following suggestions will greatly reduce your chances of malware problems in the future.

Update Windows

It is important to keep Windows updated to close vulnerabilities in the operating system as they are discovered.
I encourage you to use Automatic Updates. Information can be found at How to configure and use Automatic Updates in Windows XP

Otherwise, I suggest that you occasionally visit Windows Update and install all important updates. Please visit Windows Update as soon as possible as described below.

Close all windows and temporarily disable your anti-virus (usually through a tray icon)

Click Start, navigate to All Programs and click Windows Update
OR:
Click Start, Click Run..., type "wupdmgr.exe" without the quotes and click OK

Once the page loads follow instructions to install all critical updates. You will need to repeat this process until fully updated.

Keep installed programs up to date

Anti-virus
Most important is keeping your anti-virus software up to date. An out of date anti-virus is not much better than no anti-virus. If your anti-virus is not set to update automatically (preferred), it is imperative that you occasionally update it manually. You usually can accomplish this through a tray icon.

Update Other Vulnerable Software
Malware writers are increasingly targeting vulnerabilities in commonly used applications. There are several online sites which will scan your computer for outdated software. I've listed two below. I recommend occasionally visiting and scanning your computer to detect vulnerable software that should be updated.
F-Secure Health Check
Secunia Online Software Inspector

Best Practices for Email and Downloaded Files.

  • Do not read emails from unknown sources.
  • Make it a habit to never open email attachments from anyone, including people you know, unless you absolutely have to. If you need to open an attachment, scan it with your anti-virus before you open it.
  • Do not use Peer to Peer software to "share" media and software. You will get more than you expected and the "bonus" will not be something you want and will bring you back seeking help.
  • Do not use keygens or hacked software. First, it is stealing. Second, it is almost always infected with something. If you cannot afford to buy something, there is likely a free alternative that will be a good substitute. Search around and seek out advice from a trusted forum. Most will be glad to tell you of their favorite free program that performs the job you want done.

Additional Protection Programs

The programs listed below are excellent for improving your computer's security.

WinPatrol by Bill Pytlovany - "WinPatrol is a multi-purpose utility designed to increase performance and protect against unwanted changes." Information on it's many features can be found here

MVPS Hosts file - A replacement HOSTS file that redirects known malicious and ad serving sites to the localhost, thus preventing connection to them.
Note: MVPS Hosts file can sometimes slow down the computer so read the information on the site to mitigate this effect.

I encourage you to check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"
and miekiemoes' article "How to prevent Malware:"

If you have any questions about these suggestions, I would be happy to answer them.

Regards,
shinybeast

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can mark solved.
