Can not delete "Binary.vista.vbs"
Hi

I just ran a system scan using avast anti virus and found three
infected files with "Binary.vista.vbs" at the end which I cant manage to
fix, move or delete.

The pass for the three files are below.

C:\System Volume Information\_restore{3D030857-3ED7-49E0-B7CB-B97C44179DCF}\RP84\A0018360.msi\Binary.vista.vbs

C:\System Volume Information\_restore{3D030857-3ED7-49E0-B7CB-B97C44179DCF}\RP86\A0018927.msi\Binary.vista.vbs

C:\WINDOWS\Installer\29ea8a.msi\Binary.vista.vbs

I was searching through this forum and found a thread that looked
like the person posted had the same problem as I did.

Hi, Welcome to TSG!


Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

1. Turn off System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
System Restore will now be active again.

I was able to get rid of two files, but.....
Hello cybertch.
Thank you for the reply and advise.

After turnig off the system restore, I was able to get rid of these files below,

but after scanning my pc again using avast,
I still cant manage to delete this file

Download OTS.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTS on your desktop.
  1. Close any open browsers.
  2. If your Real protection or Antivirus intervenes with OTS, allow it to run.
  3. Open the OTS folder and double-click on OTS.exe to start the program.
  4. In Additional Scans section put a check in Disabled MS Config Items and EventViewer logs
  5. Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  6. The program will be scanning huge amounts of data so depending on your system it could take a long time to complete. Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  7. When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  8. Save that notepad file
Use the Reply button, scroll down to the attachments section and attach the notepad file here.

NOTE: The only people who can see attachments in the HJT forum are: the thread starter, Admins & Mods, and HJT Helpers & Trainees.

Are you still having problems? I don't see anything in the logs you have posted.

I am sorry but I don't understand what you mean by the first log.

I scanned my PC with combo fix, and that is the only log that appeared.

Unfortunately, the Binary.vista.vbs file still appears to be in
C:\WINDOWS\Installer\29ea8a.msi when I run a scan with avast.

Please download the OTM by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTM.exe to run it.
  • Copy all the lines in the quote box below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

  • Return to OTM, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTM
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

To remove all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created do the following:
  • Start OTScanIt
  • Click the CleanUp button

  • OTScanIt will download a small file from the Internet. If a security program or firewall warns you of this allow it to download.
  • OTScanIt will delete any tools downloaded and files/folders created and then ask you to reboot so it can remove itself. Click Yes.


After that you should be good to go.

I looked for links to download OTScanIT from this forum,
but they were all dead links (404 not found).

This was the only site on the web where I could download the program.

I did the clean up like you told me to, and rebooted my PC.

I scanned my PC with avast, but it still detected Binary.vista.vbs
from 2 files below

C:\_OTM\MovedFiles\11152009_081159\C_WINDOWS\Installer\29ea8a.msi\Binary.vi sta.vbs

C:\_OTM\MovedFiles\11152009_081159\C_WINDOWS\Installer\29ea8a.msi\Binary.fb setup_114_FbasicWD2.exe\[Embedded_R#01640]\$0\findbasic.dll

Am I doing something wrong?

You downloaded the program from post #4 but you also downloaded OTM which also has a cleanup function.

If you have remove both of those simply delete the C:\_OTM folder and that will take care of the problem.

Empty your recycle bin too!
