| Popups + general slowness I'm running Windows XP Home Edition. I've recently been getting lots of popups and a general slowness when using the internet. I use Firefox, but the popups appear to be run by Internet Explorer (at least, the task manager says iexplore.exe whenever the popups are there). The popup ads are mostly just fake antivirus software ads. A couple weeks ago, I was infected with the Personal Guard 2009 garbage, but a quick run of AdAware seems to have gotten rid of at least that. However, the problems persist. What I notice is that certain sites seem to go slowest of all. For example, I have horribly slow waiting times for sites like hotmail and facebook (perhaps because of how the sites are written? Java? Just a guess as I don't know much about it). I tried AdAware again, and it does a good job of singling out the offending dll that seems to be responsible. A reboot will do the trick and my computer will be perfectly fine when browsing (no popups or slowness), but when I reboot again, a differently named dll has been dropped from who knows where back into my system32 folder, and proceeds to infect me all over again. To top it all off, I am now getting a Stop 0x7E error when I attempt to boot in safe mode. My BIOS and drivers should all be fine, so I have no idea why this would happen. Also, a HJT log: Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 10:44:18 AM, on 11/14/2009 Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP3 (6.00.2900.5512) Boot mode: Normal Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware\AAWService.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\acs.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin\AppleMobileDeviceService.exe C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTsvcCDA.exe C:\Program Files\Pinnacle\Shared Files\Programs\USBTip\USBTip.exe C:\WINDOWS\eHome\ehRecvr.exe E:\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\WINDOWS\eHome\ehSched.exe C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\PROGRA~1\TRENDM~1\INTERN~1\PcCtlCom.exe C:\Program Files\NETGEAR\WN111v2\WN111V2.exe C:\Program Files\Rainlendar\Rainlendar.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Matt\Local Settings\Application Data\YouTube\Uploader\youtubeuploader.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Comcast\Desktop Doctor\bin\sprtsvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\PROGRA~1\TRENDM~1\INTERN~1\Tmntsrv.exe C:\PROGRA~1\TRENDM~1\INTERN~1\tmproxy.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZuneBusEnum.exe C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe C:\PROGRA~1\TRENDM~1\INTERN~1\TmPfw.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllhost.exe C:\PROGRA~1\TRENDM~1\INTERN~1\PccGuide.exe C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware\AAWTray.exe C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe R0 -
