If you receive an email that appears to be from Verizon Wireless, don't click on anything. I got a Trojan horse from one yesterday, which opens a backdoor on your computer for all kinds of information theft.

It was a stupid mistake on my part to open the email. Don't open emails when you are distracted. Danger signs I ignored: 1) the return address was not Verizon, 2) why would Verizon send a zip file, when I could go to my online account? 3) why was I stupid enough to click on an exe from an email.

The trojan was released yesterday. Symantec doesn't have anything about it on their site, that I can tell. The AVG site is hopeless for getting answers. Does anyone know of a fix?

Go here and click the green icon to download HijackThis 2.0.2.

Close all open windows, then install it in its default location: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.

Run a scan with it - which will take 30 seconds or less.

Save the resulting log in Notepad.

Return here, then copy-and-paste the entire log here.

After the log is posted here, click "Report" and then request your thread be moved to the malware removal section.

Thanks Flavalle! I have run the infected computer through AVG scans several times, and it is now coming up clean. That gives me the confidence to enable the wireless again. I will download HijackThis and give it a try!

One of the reasons I put this on the forums is that there wasn't much information available through Google. Hopefully, this post will show up in the search engines to help any other folks who have been infected!

Nope, only AVG. Norton used to be great, but it's a mess now. McAfee was on a computer I bought and it ate every page I tried to upload. Started the file transfer and then wouldn't let it finish. Their tech support is hopelessly ignorant.

Symantec used to have this great feature on their site to look up new infections. It would tell how the infection was being distributed and all kinds of useful information. Now they only tell the name of the file, which you may not know.

Delete any existing version of ComboFix you have sitting on your desktop

Please read and follow all these instructions very carefully

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop.

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop and run from the desktop and not any other folder on your computer**

1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

• Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus and anti-malware real-time protection and any script blocking components of them or your firewall before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results" or stop combofix running at all
• Click on THIS LINK to see instructions on how to temporarily disable many security programs while running combofix. The list does not cover every program. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
• Remember to re enable the protection again after combofix has finished

2. Close any open browsers and any other programs you might have running

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

If you are using windows XP It might display a pop up saying that "Recovery console is not installed, do you want to install?"
Please select yes & let it download the files it needs to do this
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review
