Can only access ome page
Ji all,
strange problem here. Working on a friends computer and he can access his homepage but nothing else.

I have tried several web sites and IE chokes on all of them wit page cannot be displayed.

Xp Home SP3
IE 8

This is on 2 connections, a dial up that he uses and on my LAN.

I tried the standard stuff, clearing the cache and cookies, etc.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Have you tried disabling the firewall?

Have you tried connecting to the Internet after booting into Safe Mode with Networking?

Also,

(From a JohnWill post)

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2 or SP3.

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults: netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

If no luck,

Please click here to download and install the HijackThis installer.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

Do not fix anything

Download the program from a working computer and copy it to a USB flash drive. Plug it into the faulty computer and run the program.

Sorry, was working on all of that after I posted trying to get things done. Yes, have done netsh, have tried safe mode with networking.

Interesting thing though..... I can go to some sites with no problem in safe mode. Other sites, like Google, when I try to go I get an error saying the address is not valid and the address looks like http:///?%20google.com

Also some pages, ask.com for example, throw an error in iexplore.

This is getting to the point of a DNR if I can't get this straight.....
