numerous problems (real/false?) rootkit, trojan?? help please!
Below is my hijack this log. I have no idea what is going on. In addition to my other issues today I have duddenly developed a problem with my host file?? Other issues are:

Warnigns coming up saying I am infected with root kit and malware. Some scans find them, some don't. I don't know if these are false warnings. I remove them and the warnings keep coming.

It takes severl trys to get to web pages sometimes and computer is often very slow or freezes

Pop ups are turned off but keep popping up

It seems that computer settings are changing on their own.

My avast scan would not complete

I would appriciate any help. Thanks in advance. forgot....Have also seen warning that there are problems with my email. they disapear so fast I can't read them. My mails often freezes and I can't close out from that page. Restart does not always work.

I also have problems playing games. I will be playing the same game for days without issue, then all of the sudden it will keep crashing. uninstall/reinstall does not help. Once there is a problen I can't repair that game.

Download GMER from: http://gmer.net/index.php

Click on the Download exe button and save it to your desktop. It will create an oddly named exe file on your desktop. Double click that file to run it and select the rootkit tab and then press scan. When the scan is done, click Copy. This will copy the report to the clipboard. Paste it into Notepad and save it and also paste the log report back here please.

I did as you requested and started a scan. It was taking a while ........someone else closed out the program by clicking the red x at the top. they thought the scan was done. I tried to redo it and my computer keeps giving me the blue screen of death and crashes. I uninstalled/ reinstalled it and the scan started.....after about 3 minutes it did the same thing. I tried to send you a new HJT log but that won't generate a logfile. It completes the scan then It tells me it cant find the file programfiles\trendmicro\highjackthis\highjackthis.logfile and asks iif I want to create a new one. no matter what I do.... i cant get a log file. I will try again with both of them and see what happens until I hear from you.

ok.... I tried again and gmer would not complete and stopped working. It said
48h4et9b.exe has stopped working. Then I got the blue screen of death again. This time I restarted in safe mode and tried to run it again. It did scan in safe mode. When it was done it said that it could not find any changes to my system but I was not able to create any type of log.

After that I booted back up in regular mode and reinstalled HJT and was able to scan and get a log this time so I will put a copy of that here for you.

Let's see if we can get this one to run.
  1. Download RootRepeal from the following location and save it to your desktop.
  2. Extract RootRepeal.exe from the archive.
  3. Open RootRepeal on your desktop.
  4. Click the Report tab.
  5. Click the Scan button.
  6. Check all seven boxes
  7. Push Ok
  8. Check the box for your main system drive (Usually C:), and press Ok.
  9. Allow RootRepeal to run a scan of your system. This may take some time.
  10. Once the scan completes, push the Save Report button. Save the log to your desktop, using a distinctive name, such as RootRepeal.txt. Include this report in your next reply, please.

Be sure to close all other browser windows and let the scan run without inteference.

what exactly do you mean. extract the files from the archive? I saved it to my desktop, double clicked the file then it opened, I double clicked on the file again and the scanner opened. I followed the other directions....I don't know if I did somthing wrong or what, It said it was initialising and then it just stopped. It said the program was not responding.
I will try again in the meantime until you let me know if I did somthing wrong.

The archive just means the zipped file and extract means to unzip it so you have access to the files it contains, so if you double-clicked on RootRepeal.exe to run it then that was correct. Let me know if you can run the scan.

Please visit Combofix Guide & Instructions for instructions for installing the recovery console and downloading and running ComboFix.

The only thing different from the instructions there is that when downloading and saving the ComboFix.exe I would like you to rename it to puppy.exe please.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that along with a new HijackThis log.

Important notes regarding ComboFix:

ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser. This can easily be changed once we're finished.

ComboFix also prevents autorun of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you, please let me know. This can be undone manually when we're finished. Read HERE for an article written by dvk01 on why we disable autoruns.

I have attempted to turn off my firewall and virus/ maware programs as requested before I run combofix. A warming keeps popping up telling me that combofix still detects them. I read the tutorial on how to turn off avast and adaware to make sure I was doing it corect Which I did) so I don't know why I keep getting the warning. I don't know if it matters but avast is listed twice with the exact same file numbers....should I just run combofix anyway?

I have checked and rechecked and they are disabled.

in an effort to try to get this scan done I figured I would just uninstall those programs to get the scan done then reinstall them later ( or differenent ones if you had any recomondations) I uninstalled addaware, avast and superanti spyware. I tried to run the scan again and a warning popped up and said it detected avast was realtime protction still running and to disable it befor clicking OK. I clicked anyway .....and it said it would continue at my own risk. How is it running if I unistalled it. I rebooted the computer after as well.... I got scared to continue so I closed it. I figured it would be best to wait until I hear back from you.

Here is the HJT log anyway

Uninstall Avast again the normal way and then run this uninstaller tool to take care of any remnants.

http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html

Then reboot and run ComboFix please.
