Gmer
sorry but by the time the scan completed too many resources were used to save...but I did get some interesting error messages that probably indicate Ido need to do a recovery....

Windows Delayed Wrtie Failed

Windows was unable to save all the data for the file \Windows\Harddisk Volume1\Wondows\system32\config\AppEvent.Evt. The data has been lost. This error was caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save sthe file elsewere.

This same message also accompanied the files;
Windows\1386, $Mft, system32, Jave\jre6\lib, system32\config\SysEvent.Evt.

Any advice?

Thanks

Sage

Disconnect from the internet and get all that you can shut down prior to running it including your anti-virus, but be sure to restart the machine so things get turned back on. I would concentrate on the HP stuff like the software update and other non essential things.

Should I run it from the recovery console? I've never run that before?

backup?
should I back up my money files? Is there still a virus or did avg get it? If I run the money cd and it is infected would it get back in puter? That is about the only file I really need. so far I haven't back it up since the infection was activated but I suppose it could have been lingering for a specific date.

What do you mean about concentrating on the hp and non essential stuff...do what with them??

I did suggest backing up your data back on Nov 26! Yes back up your data!

Since this is a HP computer you likely have a restore partition which could solve all of the problems. If returning the computer to factory settings does not fix the problem(s) then you are dealing with hardware and not software. It is best to eliminate software being the problem before moving to hardware.

Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - *{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

If that does not remove the listing we can use a different tool.

Other than that the log looks fine.

If you don't use or want the Google Toolbar certainly remove it. It may be getting installed as a bundled application. When you install something always use the custom feature so you can stop these types of add-ons from getting installed.

Now this is weird! I did as you said and it removed it from the window, I ran another scan and it showed up againbut it did not show up on the log! So I don't know if it has been removed or not. I just did another scan and it showed up once more.

Download OTS.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTS on your desktop.
  1. Close any open browsers.
  2. If your Real protection or Antivirus intervenes with OTS, allow it to run.
  3. Open the OTS folder and double-click on OTS.exe to start the program.
  4. In Additional Scans section put a check in Disabled MS Config Items, Uninstall List and EventViewer logs
  5. Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  6. The program will be scanning huge amounts of data so depending on your system it could take a long time to complete. Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  7. When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  8. Save that notepad file
Use the Reply button, scroll down to the attachments section and attach the notepad file here.

NOTE: The only people who can see attachments in the HJT forum are: the thread starter, Admins & Mods, and HJT Helpers & Trainees.

512 Ram is not very adequate. I would suggest increasing that if possible.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment JRE 6 Update 17.
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: " I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6u17 with JavaFX 1 License Agreement".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u17-windows-i586.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version. (Vista users, right click on the jre-6u17windows-i586.exe and select "Run as an Administrator.")

Start OTS. Copy/Paste the information in the Code box below into the pane where it says Paste fix here and then click the Run Fix button.

Code:
[Unregister Dlls]
[Registry - Safe List]
< Internet Explorer Settings [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\] > ->
YN -> HKEY_CURRENT_USER\: URLSearchHooks\\"*{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}" [HKLM] -> Reg Error: Key error. [Reg Error: Key error.]

The fix should only take a very short time. When the fix is completed a message box will popup telling you that it is finished. Click the Ok button and Notepad will open with a log of actions taken during the fix.
Post that information back here.
