Unable to run MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware, system infected?
Hello,

I posted another thread in this forum about my website being repeatedly hacked. I also mentioned that I couldn't run a scan with MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware, because the program would close just a few seconds after starting a scan.

The first reply to that thread was from a user suggesting that this might be a sign that my machine might be infected, and that I should run a scan with HijackThis! and post the log here. I decided to do what he/she recommended, so here it is:

Hello and welcome to TSG

IMPORTANT

Whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
To make cleaning this machine easier:-
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean!
  • Please DO NOT uninstall/install any programs unless asked to. It is more difficult when files/programs appear or disappear from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested and do not post any logs/reports unless specifically requested to do so.
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted.
  • If you have any questions or do not understand instructions, please ask before continuing.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

IMPORTANT

One or more of the identified infections that you have is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of its backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be to reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can attempt to clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be secure afterwards. The system will be extremely unlikely to be returned to its pre-infection state.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

If you decide to clean the computer, continue as follows.

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Save the file to your desktop.

Please post this log on your next reply.

Download and run Combofix
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
  • If you need help to disable your protection programs see here.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

If you need help, see this link:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)[/list]
Please reply with:-
  • Uninstall list
  • combofix log

Well, what an unpleasant surprise.

Since cleaning the computer looked less formidable than reformatting the hard drive, I decided to give it a shot. However, though I got the uninstall list saved, when I tried running ComboFix, a few minutes after the scan started, I was greeted with a blue screen that said, "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer." A lot of other text followed that, most of it advising me what to do if this is the first time I've seen this screen or otherwise, ending with the phrase "Beginning dump of physical memory."

I restarted my computer when I first saw this, but encountered the same thing again when I tried running ComboFix again. It's been years since I've seen the Blue Screen of Death, so I don't know if that was it or not, but I'm sure it's not a good sign.

I'm willing to go through with reformatting my hard drive just to make sure everything is safe (and I'll start looking into that option), but I'll post the uninstall list here as well.

Reformatting is your choice to make, Let me know if that is what you decide. I have posted new instructions in case you decide otherwise.

Open Hijack This and select Do a System Scan Only place a check next to the below lines if still present
  • O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {4982D40A-C53B-4615-B15B-B5B5E98D167C} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [photo_id] C:\WINDOWS\system32\photo_id.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [08170521] "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\08170521\08170521.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Regedit32] C:\WINDOWS\system32\regedit.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [photo_id] C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\photo_id.exe
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

I've given my predicament a bit of thought, and considering the malware problems my computer has had in the past and how old it is in computer years (about 5 years old), I think it would be a good idea if I re-formatted my hard drive and started over with a metaphorical clean slate. I have my computer's Windows XP re-installation CD and a Service Pack 2 update CD, so I guess I'm just about set.

I also have an internal secondary hard drive that I use only for storage and is large enough to hold all of my files. Would the reformatting process affect the files on that hard drive at all? Also, are there any system files or folders that I shouldn't back up before the reformatting process (such as possibly infected system files and the like)?

Also, I've disconnected from the Internet per your advice, and I'm typing this on another computer.

After 5 years you won’t know yourself!

Sounds good, do you have the drivers and utilities disk? Can make life easier if you do. Otherwise find out what you need first.

It should not be effected as you choose which drive you are formatting and what you are re-installing on. For the best advice you should ask in the XP forum as they would be more knowledgeable than myself on such matters. You would be formatting C:\ and I gather your second drive has been assigned another letter. As I said ask these question is the XP forum for more accurate and detailed answers. Sadly I am not technical on all things computerish, only trained at spotting the nasties.

Documents and pictures are pretty much safe as can be. Things downloaded from the internet or things you don’t really know what they are, it is always advisable to scan before putting them back on your clean machine. System files as such will be wiped out and new ones re-installled with the OS.

I hope this helps, again I have to say any technical questions, please ask in the general help forum.

Okay, I'll start a new thread in the XP forum. Thank you very much for the advice.

(By the way, it turns out that that OS re-installation disk I mentioned is from an another even older computer than mine. Luckily, I found the System Restoration disk that I know came with my PC, and it says that it contains WinXP programs and drivers, so hopefully that disk is all I'll need.)

Well, the reformatting process was pretty successful overall, with one or two problems that I'll ask about in the WinXP forum. I still haven't connected the computer with the reformatted hard drive to the Internet yet, but I copied HijackThis to that computer and ran a scan, and the result was the attached logfile. I'd say it looks about as clean as it's ever going to look, but what is your take on it?

Make sure you have Antivirus installed and updated before you do anything at all internet wise. Then of course get all windows updates, pref to SP3 ASAP. I find it is better to get all the updates done before you start adding programs.

Just read your other post regarding the sound. Sounds like drivers.

Right click my computer then select properties. Click on Hardware Tab the click on Device manager.

Are there yellow question marks or exclamation marks? These are for devices that need drivers.

Let me know what is listed as missing.

Since the System Recovery disc I used claimed that its purpose was to reinstall the OS, programs and drivers, I think it's a safe bet that most, if not all of my drivers have been reinstalled. I haven't been able to transfer Spy Sweeper to my new machine, but I've made sure Windows Firewall is enabled and I've installed Norton Antivirus (I may replace it with a newer version of Spy Sweeper later).

Unfortunately, after a couple uneventful hours of tinkering with my newly reinstalled OS, I've suddenly run into some serious hardware problems, so it looks like I have several new problems where I once had one. Still, thank you very much for your help with this problem. I'll seek help with the others on the appropriate forums and consider this problem solved.
