Windows Explorer Error When I close any folder
Hi,

I'm having problems with the Windows Explorer Error for awhile.

Everytime I close "My Documents" "My Music" Or Even "My Computer" I always get a Windows Explorer Error... It's getting annoying now and I was wondering if anyone could help me fix it?

Here is the HiJackThis Report

You have two antivirus programs running at the same time, Norton and Kaspersky. Never run more than one or they will surely conflict. Uninstall one. I would keep Kaspersky and get rid of Norton. To uninstall Norton, use the Norton Removal Tool.

Your computer is also infected. Please click on the Report button and kindly ask to be moved to the Malware Removal forum.

Once your computer is cleared from malware, please follow these instructions:

You have too many Startup applications loading with Windows and too many processes running in the background. This can significantly increase your Startup time and affect overall performance.

You should definitely trim down your Startup list. Other than your security software, very few applications need to load with Windows at startup.

Click on Start > Run > and type msconfig.

Under the Startup tab, uncheck all unnecessary applications. Use these three websites to help you decide which items to uncheck:

Simply copy and paste the .exe files you see at the end of your HijackThis log's 04 (Startup) entries one by one.

1-
System Lookup (my favorite - for this one, you can paste the whole 04 entry)

2-
PC Review - Startup Files Database

3-
Startup Applications List

Remember, a lot of applications can be started manually when needed.

A list of names and files will appear. At the end of each entry, you'll notice a symbol:

Y = Normally leave to run at start-up

N = Not required - often infrequently used tasks that can be started manually, if necessary

U = User's choice - depends whether a user deems it necessary

X = Malware, spyware, adware, or other potentially unwanted items

? = Currently unknown status

Make sure to choose the correct information in the list, relating to the actual programs installed on your computer. Do not be alarmed by red "Xs" pointing to malware, especially if I haven't seen any in your HijackThis log. I do check before recommending this trimming.

Example:

Copy the following entry from your HijackThis log:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime

Paste it in this website: 1-
System Lookup

Now
here is what you get. On line #7, you'll see the Name (QuickTime Task), the Filename (Qttask.exe), the Description and at the end of the line, you'll see a N, meaning Not required - often infrequently used tasks that can be started manually, if necessary. So, you can without a doubt uncheck it from your Startup list.

After rebooting, when the small System Configuration Utility window appears, ignore the message. Put a check mark in that window, then click OK.

Download to Desktop: DDS by sUBs from one of these locations:

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.com
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds

double click DDS.scr to run

When complete, DDS.txt will open.

Click Yes for Optional Scan.
Save both reports to your desktop.

GMER:
=====

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.

Ensure you have uninstalled any CD Emulation programs before you run GMER as outlined here
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Double click GMER.exe.
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a full scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan..

Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are UNCHECKED ...
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt"
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

the log shows me, that you tried to do a SP3 install/upfdate which failed & only partially installed and that is going to be your problem

I am not sure this is actually fixable but I would go tom add/remove programs & uninstall SP3 & revert to SP2 for now & see if it solves the problem

I am not sure it will roll back though as it didn't fully install according to the error messages in teh log & that has left it unstable

Quote:
20/11/2009 1:47:32 AM, error: NtServicePack [4374] - Windows XP Service Pack 3 installation failed, leaving Windows XP partially updated.
Service Pack 3 installation did not complete.

I do think it is the failed upgrade to SP3 that is the problem

Okay I removed SP3, and I am still getting an Explorer Error when I open a video folder etc. I am also still getting an error for gmer too.

The thing is that I won't get Explorer Error Unless I close a Video folder, when I do it affects My Documents etc.

Should I also try running a Anti Virus Scan? Or is there any other way to get rid of it without doing a virus scan?
