Unhappy cmd.exe taking 80% cpu
i am not sure what it is, or what it does, but when i bought this computer a year ago, i never had problems. 4 months ago, i downloaded a keylogger from a worldofwarcraft site. i wiped my computer clean back to factory settings. but from then on out, my computer has been crashing, and vary slow. i pluged in my old 112mb of ram laptop from 1995 and had a race with my new 1 gig ram computer. from power button to first to internet, and the old computer is running faster. so i know somethings wrong. i started looking into it and seen this file Cmd.exe with up to 80% of my cpu power, my computer jumps from 55% 88% cpu being used. now the problem with this is, i had no programs running. i closed all programs i could in system tray. is this common to never see your cpu go below 50% while not running any programs? also noticed my physical memory after the reinstall of windows was low, now its at 94% used up.

Have you tried running a full drive Malware scan?

This sounds like an infection as cmd.exe does not normally run except when you use it for some reason. Also if it is not running from the c:\windows\system32 directory, it is not the Microsoft file.

Post a HijackThis scanlog >>

Download and install HijackThis. Run it and select "do a system scan and save the log file". Then copy/paste the contents of the log to a reply

http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en...ols/hijackthis

You might also want to test in "Clean Boot" mode, but do this after posting the Scanlog.

CLEAN BOOT TROUBLESHOOTING technique

First, restart in Safe Mode if necessary -- (tap the f8 key promptly on startup and choose the Safe Mode option from the boot menu) or Normal mode

Then:

Run msconfig and select the "Services" tab. Check "Hide Microsoft Services" and then disable the rest. Also uncheck "load startup items" on the general page.

Now restart and test the issue at hand

If no problems, run msconfig and recheck half the disabled items on the Services tab. Test again. If the problem recurs, UNcheck half the items you just checked to narrow down the culprit.

If the problem didn't occur, check the other half, so all the Services are enabled -- proceed to do this on the startup tab as well.

Get the idea? You want to isolate the problem to a specific startup if possible.

Note: if you already have items unchecked under msconfig > startups and are in “selective” startup mode – you should note what these are before beginning. They will need to be de-selected again.

Safe Mode is only part of it. Follow Rollin' Rog's instructions or read THIS from Microsoft on the Clean Boot procedure.

And please do post a HijackThis log.

Please click here to download and install version 2.0.2 of the HijackThis Installer.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

Do not fix anything

thank you for the replay. but i am now having a problem with HijackThis running, when i click scan, i get a pop up, it reads: "For some reason ytour system denied write access to the Hosts file. if any hijaced domains are in this file, hijackthis may not be able to fix this.

if that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. to do this, click sttart, run and type:

notepad c:windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

and press enter. find the line(s) hijackthis reports and delete them. save the file as 'hosts'(with quotes), and reboot.

for vista: simply exit hijackthis, right click on the hijackthis icon, choose 'run as administrator'

now my problem, i am vista, i tryed to do what it said, but no option came up for that. and then i tryed to do the c:\windows\system32 etc. i got another pop up asking how to open it, i used wordpad to open the file, and when i did, there was nothing in it like it said. heres what it says in that file:

# Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
127.0.0.1 localhost
::1 localhost

So not sure what to do to get the log you guys need to help me.

Also, be sure to download and install the Norton Removal Tool. You have traces of Symantec on your computer. Norton is notorious for various software conflicts and Internet connection problems when not properly uninstalled.
