You have an outdated version of HijackThis.

Please click here to download and install version 2.0.2 of the HijackThis Installer.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

Do not fix anything

lost930:

Which model number in this list is your laptop? If you're not sure, advise what the product/part number is on the sticker on the bottom of the case.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Download these programs:

Sun Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0.18

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.44

SUPERAntiSpyware 4.33.0.1000

AVG Free Edition 9.0 (If you're currently using the paid version and not the free version of AVG8, disregard this one)

Just download and save them for now and don't install any of them yet.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Don't forget to report your thread to the malware section, as advised.

The part number/product number will confirm which one it is, but it's likely this one if it has an AMD processor.

According to the CRUCIAL site, the HP Pavilion ze4600 series laptop comes with a single 256 MB module of RAM in 1 of the 2 slots. That laptop supports up to 1024 MB of RAM, so that means you can install up to a 512 MB module in both slots. If it still has only 256 MB of RAM, you need to add a 512 MB module to the empty slot to increase the RAM amount to 768 MB, or you need to install matching 512 MB modules - which is what I would do. Windows XP will run like a snail with only 256 MB, and there's already an additional load on that laptop by it having too many programs running in the background and being infected. Go here and scroll down to see what the module for that laptop looks like and what its specs are.

Your thread is now in the malware section, so it's a matter now of waiting for a yellow shield malware expert to reply and assist you.

A laptop will have a sticker on the bottom of the case with the product/part number, model number, serial number, etc..

You can buy RAM modules and install them inside the case yourself - if you have some level of computer experience and are willing to do it yourself. If you're not, you can buy the modules and then take the laptop and modules to a computer shop and have a technician install the modules, or you can take the laptop to a computer shop and then buy the modules there and have them installed.

Right-click MY COMPUTER, then click Properties. What's listed at the bottom of the General tab for the amount of RAM?

If the General tab is showing 448 MB of RAM, that means there's 512 MB of RAM, but the on-board graphics controller has 64 MB of RAM dedicated for its use, so Windows XP is using 448 MB of RAM(512 - 64 = 448). Once the startup load is trimmed down and the infection problem resolved and some other things done, the speed and performance should improve.

Just download and save those programs, as previously advised to, and do not install nor use any of them at this time.

As soon as a yellow shield malware expert assists you and resolves the infection problem, we'll assist you with trimming down the startup load and installing the saved programs and whatever else needs to be done. First things first.

I'm going off-line until tomorrow morning.

Delete any existing version of ComboFix you have sitting on your desktop
Please read and follow all these instructions very carefully

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop.

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop and run from the desktop and not any other folder on your computer**
--------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus and anti-malware real-time protection and any script blocking components of them or your firewall before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results" or stop combofix running at all
  • Click on THIS LINK to see instructions on how to temporarily disable many security programs while running combofix. The list does not cover every program. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
  • Remember to re enable the protection again after combofix has finished
--------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Close any open browsers and any other programs you might have running
Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
If you are using windows XP It might display a pop up saying that "Recovery console is not installed, do you want to install?"
Please select yes & let it download the files it needs to do this
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

Note: ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser.
Note: Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell us when you reply. Read HERE why we disable autoruns

Please do not install any new programs or update anything (always allow your antivirus/antispyware to update) unless told to do so while we are fixing your problem. If combofix alerts to a new version and offers to update, please let it. It is essential we always use the latest version.
