Computer running slow and programs hanging
My computer has a varaible speed fan that you only hear when it spins up and this only happens when I have way too many applications running. The last little while the fan seems to be spinning up very frequently and even when I don't have much running. This alone would not be a concern but the computer is running slower and programs often hang and have to be closed through the task manager. Switching from one window to another is also slower, and essentially everything is notably slower. I have run a virus scan and aside from Hijack this triggering the scanner nothing else shows up. I am also running Windows Defender. I am rebooting my computer a few times a day now instead of every few days like I used to as I often getting a message saying Windows Explorer has encountered problems and must be shut down, so then I have to reboot the computer. When I go to shut down there are always programs listed that have stopped responding and you are asked to click the end now button before it shuts down. Previously this would happen occasionally but not ever like it has lately. Curiously one of the programs that often comes up that has to be ended is only the name of the city I live in instead of a program name that I recognize, so can't imagine what that might be.

Here is the Hijack This log and would certainly apprecaite any suggestions you may have.
Thank you

Since posting the above I ran Kaspersky and it found

Trojan.Win32.BHO.lkl in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONTEST.DLL

I have not done anything with it yet.

You have two anti-virus programs running which will cause trouble. Uninstall one of them.

Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment JRE 6 Update 18.
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: " I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6u18 with JavaFX 1 License Agreement".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u18-windows-i586.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version. (Vista users, right click on the jre-6u18windows-i586.exe and select "Run as an Administrator.")

Thanks for the reply.

Can you tell me what two anti-virus programs I have running. I know I have Avast running but that is the only one I am aware of. If you can give me the name of the other one I can see if I can uninstall it.

Thanks again

Most of it is gone but look for Symantec products.

FIrst I checked in add remove programs and can't find anything related to Symantec. I also checked in the start menu to see if there as a folder with an uninstall but nothing for Symantec either, so if you can tell me where else I might look I would appreciate it.

I removed the item from HJT as instructed.

Ran ATF Cleaner as instructed

Ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware as instructed and the log is below.

I downloaded Java however it is 6u17 not 6u18. I selected the free download on the right side of the link you gave so not sure why it is 6u17 and not 6u18

For Java in the add/remove programs I found two items listed below

J2SE Runtime Enviroment 5.0 Update 6
and
Java 6 Update 18.

I haven't removed or installed either of the Java items yet as I wasn't sure about the download I did

Thank you

I deleted some of your bumps. No worries just less scrolling for me.

Remove this java: J2SE Runtime Enviroment 5.0 Update 6

Download OTS.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTS on your desktop.
  1. Close any open browsers.
  2. If your Real protection or Antivirus intervenes with OTS, allow it to run.
  3. Open the OTS folder and double-click on OTS.exe to start the program.
  4. In Additional Scans section put a check in Disabled MS Config Items, Uninstall List and EventViewer logs
  5. Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  6. The program will be scanning huge amounts of data so depending on your system it could take a long time to complete. Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  7. When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  8. Save that notepad file
Use the Reply button, scroll down to the attachments section and attach the notepad file here.

Something else I am puzzled about is that in Windows Explorer I have a DVD Drive (O

I have two DVD drives which are e: and F: but no O:, so have no idea what it is or why it appears in the drive list.

Thank you

I should also mention that safe list was checked by the additional scans so I left it checked. Don't know if this makes any difference or not.

For the "O" drive... I'll take a wild guess and say that may be your tomtom. Not owning one I assume you do from time to time connect that device to your computer. (?)

Remove LiveUpdate (Symantec Corporation) from add/remove programs.

Start OTS. Copy/Paste the information in the Code box below into the pane where it says Paste fix here and then click the Run Fix button.

Code:
[Unregister Dlls]
[Registry - Safe List]
< Internet Explorer ToolBars [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\] > -> HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\
YN -> ShellBrowser\\"{C4069E3A-68F1-403E-B40E-20066696354B}" [HKLM] -> Reg Error: Key error. [Reg Error: Key error.]
YN -> WebBrowser\\"{EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88}" [HKLM] -> Reg Error: Key error. [Yahoo! Toolbar]
< Run [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\] > -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
YN -> "" -> []
< Standard Profile Authorized Applications List > -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\StandardProfile\AuthorizedApplications\List

[Files/Folders - Created Within 30 Days]
NY ->  7 C:\WINDOWS\System32\*.tmp files -> C:\WINDOWS\System32\*.tmp
NY ->  3 C:\WINDOWS\*.tmp files -> C:\WINDOWS\*.tmp
[Files/Folders - Modified Within 30 Days]
NY ->  7 C:\WINDOWS\System32\*.tmp files -> C:\WINDOWS\System32\*.tmp
NY ->  44 C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\jkos-HP_Administrator\binaries\*.tmp files -> C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\jkos-HP_Administrator\binaries\*.tmp
NY ->  44 C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\jkos-HP_Administrator\binaries\*.tmp files -> C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\jkos-HP_Administrator\binaries\*.tmp
NY ->  3 C:\WINDOWS\*.tmp files -> C:\WINDOWS\*.tmp
NY ->  28 C:\WINDOWS\Temp\*.tmp files -> C:\WINDOWS\Temp\*.tmp
NY ->  12178 C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\*.tmp files -> C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\*.tmp
NY ->  12178 C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\*.tmp files -> C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\*.tmp
NY ->  12178 C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\*.tmp files -> C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\*.tmp
NY ->  1 C:\*.tmp files -> C:\*.tmp

The fix should only take a very short time however there are a large number of temp files being removed so don't panic if it seems the drive is working. When the fix is completed a message box will popup telling you that it is finished. Click the Ok button and Notepad will open with a log of actions taken during the fix.
Post that information back here.

Thanks for the help so far.

I don't think the O: is related to the TomTom but could be wrong. I am going to uninstall it to see if that drive disappears.

I thought I had attached the file in the above post. After reveiwing the max file sizes it appears this file is too large to attach. Should I try to zip it and attach?

Thanks

I think it's ok not to post it. As I said there was removal of a substantial number of temp files.

How is the machine running now?

It is better but don't think it is what it should be. When I used to boot, and once the desktop came up, it would take a minute or two to load the resident stuff. Now it takes about two minutes just sitting on the desktop before the resident stuff even starts to load, and then it is another couple of minutes before the resident stuff is loaded, and I still get an hour glass after it appears everything is loaded and there is lag before anything selected will run.

Also, and this may be unrelated, but in Outlook Express, when accessing Newsgroups it times out before it connects. This was never the case before and has gone on for quite some time now so don't think it is the ISP.

Thank you
