infected computer
Good Morning to all; Sorry if I get a little wordy. I was guided to this forum by a really nice lady( I don't know if it's proper to mention her by name). I have a DEll Vostro 200, running windows XP and It's badly infected. I doubt there's many people as computer challenged as myself, the dillema being that there aren't any computer repair places within 60 miles and I wouldn't be able to tell the sheep from the goats anyway.... Not to mention I'm in agriculture and moneys tight, So here I am. I won't be insulted if no-one wants to take on my case. BUT if you do, you'll need plenty of patience. For my part,I'll do,to the best of my ability everything asked of me. As far as error messages theres so many I lost track( They all show up when I power on, and will write them down if need be). Please be specific in instructions. One question though, how do we communicate? does everything from here on out get stacked onto this initial message? I was asked earlier if I wanted to be contacted via e-mail, but all you hear on TV is NOT to answer E-mails from folks you don't know because of cooties(my generic word for bad things).

Hi, Welcome to TSG!

Please make all replies to this thread.

Download OTS.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTS on your desktop.
  1. Close any open browsers.
  2. If your Real protection or Antivirus intervenes with OTS, allow it to run.
  3. Open the OTS folder and double-click on OTS.exe to start the program.
  4. In Additional Scans section put a check in Disabled MS Config Items, Uninstall List and EventViewer logs
  5. Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  6. The program will be scanning huge amounts of data so depending on your system it could take a long time to complete. Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  7. When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  8. Save that notepad file
Use the Reply button, scroll down to the attachments section and attach the notepad file here.

NOTE: The only people who can see attachments in the HJT forum are: the thread starter, Admins & Mods, and HJT Helpers & Trainees.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment JRE 6 Update 17.
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: " I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6u17 with JavaFX 1 License Agreement".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u17-windows-i586.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Did you install Ask Toolbar? If not I suggest going to add/remove programs and removing it. It is considered malware and beyond that I consider it Foistware

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
If you are not sure how to disable see this help page.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

Infected computer.
Dear Tech guys:

You are so wonderful. When I rebooted there were no .exe errors. I have tried to locate the C:\ComboFix.txt file but I can't find it . I ran a search thru the entire C Drive and it could not find it. I also looked under explore for the C drive and for desktop. I see the program Combo fix but I can't get a report from it. If you tell me how to do it I will send it to you. Additionally, if my computer is fixed which items and programs I have downloaded on to my desktop should I keep. Also, We have AVG as our Security System..Why didn't any of their scans prevent the infection. It updates automatically. Is there a better Security program(s) to purchase.

Thank you and I await your reply.

Please run ESET Online Scanner

Note: You can use IE or FireFox for this scan. You need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus. If you need help with that look here.

Save the log from the on line scan and post it back here.

Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!
