The following programs don't have to be running ar Startup. They can be started manually from your programs.

Go to Start > RUN
Type in msconfig
Hit OK
Go to the tab Startup
You can uncheck the following:

[AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE

[Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"

[QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime

[TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

[NVIEW] rundll32.exe nview.dll,nViewLoadHook

[swg] "C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe"

[ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe

[Shockwave Updater] C:\WINDOWS\system32\Adobe\Shockwave 11\SwHelper_1151601.exe -Update -1151601 -"Mozilla/5.0_(Windows;_U;_Windows_NT_5.1;_en-US;_rv:1.9.0.1)_Gecko/2008070208_Firefox/3.0.1_GTB6_(.NET_CLR_3.5.30729)" -"http://www.americangirl.com/fun/travel/bz/index.php?section=game"

PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe

NkvMon.exe.lnk = C:\Program Files\Nikon\NkView5\NkvMon.exe

Click Apply, then OK
You will be prompted to restart the computer. Restart it.
Once Windows loads and you reach the desktop, a box will come up saying you are in Selective Startup
This is normal to occur.
Just checkmark the box to not remind you again

Done, found all but the shockwave updater.
Also downloaded a program called autoruns from bleeping computer, do we need any info from this program?

If I'm not using explorer for my browser, can i turn off some of that stuff too?

Also it looks like the hard drive has been split, one is called D: and is 6.59gig total-2.4gb free, the other is the C:67.9 gb total, 53.8gb free. The D: is holding stuff from compaq, none of my things. I'm almost sure there must be some trash lying around on the c:drive anyway to tell? Hard to believe there is 14gb of stuff on this machine?

Autoruns is a much more indepth way to view the programs that start automatically. If you feel comfortable unchecking other items, then you can proceed with it.
Normally I tell users to look up the process first to see what it is, and if it's necessary to run at Startup.
This site is most helpful: http://www.systemlookup.com/lists.php?list=2

Do you mean Internet Explorer?

The D: drive is your Compaq Recovery Partition.

A good start with the C: drive would be uninstalling unused programs. Then delete Temp files/cookies/temporary internet files.

Run a Disk Cleanup: http://www.theeldergeek.com/disk_cleanup_utility.htm

and a Disk Defrag: http://www.theeldergeek.com/disk_def...er_utility.htm

I have gone thru add/remove programs and uninstalled everything that was unused. Deleted all temp files, cookies etc that i could find. Will do another cleanup and start from there. Yes I meant internet explorer, I'm using firefox as my browser.

Good

And Firefox is a much better (and safer) browser anyway. Did you want to uninstall Internet Explorer too since you aren't using it?

I still believe you need to add more RAM to that machine.

You're welcome

You can use the website www.crucial.com to determine what kind of RAM you need and how much your system can handle.
