Hi and welcome

Download Combofix from this webpage: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:

Rescan with Hijack This.
Close all browser windows except Hijack This.
Put a check mark beside these entries and click "Fix Checked".

Reboot.

248MB is very low, especially for Windows XP. It's no surprise the system is running slow. I would invest in more RAM.

Thanks for all your help! what about the last entry in the hijack log, is this related to norton? This machine once had norton installed and it has been uninstalled for awhile now. Also the yahoo and windows messenger related items, i do not use those programs. and what is this:O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [Shockwave Updater] C:\WINDOWS\system32\Adobe\Shockwave 11\SwHelper_1151601.exe -Update -1151601 -"Mozilla/5.0_(Windows;_U;_Windows_NT_5.1;_en-US;_rv:1.9.0.1)_Gecko/2008070208_Firefox/3.0.1_GTB6_(.NET_CLR_3.5.30729)" -"http://www.americangirl.com/fun/travel/bz/index.php?section=game"

Once again thanks for the help

If you mean this entry: O23 - Service: Symantec Core LC - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe

Then yes, that is Norton related. Sometimes it can be difficult to remove it entirely. Try the Norton Removal tool: http://service1.symantec.com/Support...05033108162039

Do you have another anti-virus program to put on your system to protect it?

Are you referring to the 09 Windows Messenger entries?

And the Shockwave entry is harmless. It is the Macromedia Shockwave Player.

I'm going to start running AVG, will this help?
Do you see anything else that needs to be corrected at this time?
Thanks again

Definitely get AVG. It's important to have protection on your computer.

This thread also gives good advice on keeping your computer secure: http://forums.techguy.org/malware-re...w-tighten.html

Everything else in the log looks fine.

I believe I see the culprit.

Rescan with Hijack This.
Close all browser windows except Hijack This.
Put a check mark beside these entries and click "Fix Checked".

O4 - Global Startup: Compaq Connections.lnk = C:\Program Files\Compaq Connections\1940576\Program\BackWeb-1940576.exe

Reboot.

Does it still come up?

By the way, we also may be able to speed things up by trimming down your Startup list.
There are a few unnecessary programs running that we could turn off if you like.
