Anytime I try to run a program (i.e. itunes) it will say "this file does not ave a program associated with it for performing this action." Then I try to do that and it does not work. I ran Avira and Mcfee scans and they both found a few viruses and I deleted them; however, I am still having the problems. In addition, it will freeze up, ctrl alt delete, does not bring it out of its freeze.

• It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference. I may ask you to boot into Safe Mode where you will be unable to follow my instructions online.

Step 1


Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
Post the contents of exehelperlog.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com, and should open at the end of the scan)

Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).


Step 2

Download OTS to your Desktop

• Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
• Double-click on OTS.exe to start the program.
• Check the box that says Scan All Users
• Under Basic Scans please change the radio button under Registry from Safe List to All.
• Under Additional Scans check the following:
  • Reg - Desktop Components
  • Reg - Disabled MS Config Items
  • Reg - NetSvcs
  • Reg - Shell Spawning
  • Reg - Uninstall List
  • File - Lop Check
  • File - Purity Scan
  • Evnt - EvtViewer (last 10)
• Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
• Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
• When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
• Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.

Please attach the log in your next post. To do so click on the blue "Reply" button or "Go Advanced" and click on the "Manage Attachments" button

Step 3

Scan With RKUnHooker

• Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
• Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
• Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
• Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth,. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
• Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
• Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.

Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore it:

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"


Step 4


Please download MBRCheck.exe to your desktop.

• Be sure to disable your security programs
• Double click on the file to run it (Vista and Windows 7 users will have to confirm the UAC prompt)

• If you are prompted with options, enter N at the prompt and press Enter
• Press Enter again
• A .txt file named MBRCheck_mm.dd.yy_hh.mm.ss should appear on your deskop. Please post the contents of that file.

So I am having a problem with step one. First off, I cant run any browser on my computer, therefore, I am downloading the exehelper on another comp and that comp says it is a virus. Then I say no it is not and save it to a usb drive and then try to move it to my computer. However, it doesnt show up. Is there another way or another program? Like I said I can not open any internet browsers I even tried downloading a browser onto the other comp then transferring it over via usb memory stick and it is still not working. Any advice?

Try disabling the antivirus on the computer before downloading the file. I assure you that's a false positive.


If that doesn't work, try this tool instead of exehelper:

Please download and run the following tool to help allow other programs to run.
There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Admin
You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them. If one doesn't work try a different one.

• Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Disabling Security Programs
• Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  
  Note: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed.
• As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
• Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:




Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you please let me know. A increasing number of infections are spreading using Autoplay and leaving it disabled is a good idea.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
