Primary Drive only visible in safe mode??
Got a really strange query here that a friend has come to me with.

After removal of a Trojan and malware the c drive is invisible unless in safe mode. The system boots and runs fine now and in "my computer" there is the c and d drives visible but in disk management and device manager only the d drive shows.. she is able to save, install etc to the c drive as normal but for some reason it is not showing up.

I've attached shots to explain what I mean and a hijackthis log.. any help appreciated on this strange one, thanks in advance

Delete any existing version of ComboFix you have sitting on your desktop
Please read and follow all these instructions very carefully

Download ComboFix from Here or Hereto your Desktop.

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop and run from the desktop and not any other folder on your computer**
--------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus and anti-malware real-time protection and any script blocking components of them or your firewall before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results" or stop combofix running at all
  • Click on THIS LINK to see instructions on how to temporarily disable many security programs while running combofix. The list does not cover every program. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
  • Remember to re enable the protection again after combofix has finished
--------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Close any open browsers and any other programs you might have running
Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
If you are using windows XP It might display a pop up saying that "Recovery console is not installed, do you want to install?"
Please select yes & let it download the files it needs to do this
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

Note: ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser.
Note: Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell us when you reply. Read HERE why we disable autoruns

Please do not install any new programs or update anything (always allow your antivirus/antispyware to update) unless told to do so while we are fixing your problem. If combofix alerts to a new version and offers to update, please let it. It is essential we always use the latest version.

Please tell us if it has cured the problems or if there are any outstanding issues

Thanks dvk and hello again :-)

I mbam scan was done in our absence

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\cdrom (Trojan.Patched) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully."

The drive is now visible again but the cd and dvd drive are not detected, they are both powered just not showing in the system. Is it still necessary to do the combo-fix scan to get these up and running again?

if that is what I think it is then you have major problems

run combofix so I can see what that shows But I will probably ask you to run an online vrius scan afterwards

I do suspect a file infector virus that infects all running .exe & dll files as is almost impossible to get rid of

MBAM has deleted a vital system file cdrom.sys and that is why dvd & cd isn't working

if it can't disinfect it, it should ignore it not delete a system file

Ok, just ran combo fix, it installed the recovery console then detected the presence of rootkit activity so rebooted then completed scanning. However there is no output log for combofix, I have done a search but can only find the exe file and countless pf files.

reboot again & run Combofix again and it should complete this time, IF the virus hasn't infected combofix

if it is the virus I suspect it is then every time we run any program/tool/antivirus etc, that program will be infected itself, in whch case format & reinstall is the only answer, but lets see if CF will run this time to completion & make its log

oh this isn't good.. rebooted and ran combofix twice more, same result each time with rootkit being detected then it reboots and completes the scan but when it gets to the last stage there is no log file message it just reboots the system.

Ran a housecall quick scan which found no threats so then did a full scan which found 4 threats(result attached).

I then tried combofix again with the same result.

Sounds like a reinstall is going to be the easiest option here but how do I do that if the system is not detecting the drives? It can see a flash drive when plugged in but the option to boot to usb in bios says usb device not installed.

Can I use sfc/scannow safely from an iso to restore the missing system file?

lets see what this shows first

Download to Desktop: DDS by sUBs from one of these locations:

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.com
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds

double click DDS.scr to run

When complete, DDS.txt will open.

Click Yes for Optional Scan.
Save both reports to your desktop.
DDS.txt
Attach.txt

post the contents of both logs back here.

ran combofix twice more, same results still. Rootkit presence detected so it reboots, completes stages then reboots again with no log file output.

OK lets see what this shows & if we can get the rootkit another way

Please download GMER from: http://gmer.net/index.php

Click on the "Download EXE" button and save the randomly named .exe file to your desktop.

Note: You must uninstall any CD Emulation programs that you have before running GMER as they can cause conflicts and give false results.

Double click the GMER .exe file on your desktop to run the tool and it will automatically do a quick scan.

If the tool warns of rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a full scan, click on No and make sure the following are unchecked on the right-hand side:

IAT/EAT
Any drive letter other than the primary system drive (which is generally C).

Click the Scan button and when the scan is finished, click Save and save the log in Notepad with the name ark.txt to your desktop.

Note: It's important that all other windows be closed and that you don't touch the mouse or do anything with the PC during the scan as it may cause it to freeze.

Uninstalled magicdisc and tried to run GMER a few times, as soon as I click to run GMER the system reboots with no scan done.
