Adding downloads to your own web site
Hi all

I have done many searches on engines but can't find any info on how to add a function that enables readers to download files on my hard drive/web site, such as a .pdf and .exe (eBooks)
I need this to have a password protect function so that people can only download after they have paid

Can some one please tell me, or point me in the right direction

many thanks

Ali

If your web site has some sort of active scripting like ASP or PHP you can set up accounts that will only allow access to certain areas of the web site based on the user login type. Look up "membership script ASP PHP" on Google. Of course your web host has to support the script type as well as the database you will be using.

Password protect a folder
Alison,

You could always password protect the folder where you intend to store the files.

You can set passwords on folder in cPanel with different usernames and passwords for different people.

Hello Alison,

My boss sells lots of ebooks in PDF and other formats. For PDF, he uses Adobe Acrobat (but other shareware products can be used) -- to put a password on the individual PDF file. Without the password, the file can't be opened. When somebody buys an ebook, I email the password to the buyer.

For other file types, you can .zip (compress) the file, and then add a password to that zipped file. ... Same deal: after the buyer downloads the ebook, then I email the password. ... Lots of good zip software is around: we have used EnZip (free), and now are using StuffIt. I've heard that PowerArchiver is also very good. (Note: this paragraph above applies also to PDF files: you might zip up a PDF file and password protect that zipped file, and skip the Acrobat-based password).

Here's the website to give you ideas about how to sell your ebooks:

Good Luck ... RB

You could do all of this automatically with some shopping cart software.
Check out the PayPal Developer Network

Most major shoping carts can also do virtual sales (I believe OSCommerce and ZenCart have mods for this)
