Website content by external data
I want to setup a website that have content updated by an external file, mainly an excel file or similar. I'm not sure where to start or what software to use. Any knowledge would be very helpful. Thanks.

Ok, I've been looking around the internet and decided I would use xml. The only problem I have now is that I don't know how to input it in to a webpage in conjunction with XHTML. I was reading something that said XHTML is like XML or something. How would I go about input the info?

I didn't really know too much about those and XML looked easier to create and modify.

Anyway, which would you recommend, PHP or ASP? I'm not too familiar with either. I'm going to be looking around the internet for websites on both. From what I do know, I think, these are similar to html and xhtml, as they make up the webpage. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Would I have to write out the site's or page's design in php? Sorry for the noob questions.

Keep in mind that the only reason I want to do this is because I don't want to have to edit the html or xhtml, but instead I would like to edit one external file, and then in turn that file determines what content is on the html or xhtml page. I was hoping this would make things a little easier on my end, so I wouldn't have to edit the html and fix anything odd with the design. Thanks for your reply by the way.

XML along doesn't do anything. You have to define everything to make it work. Since XML is user defined, there are no set tags to use with it.

XHTML is HTML defined as an XML application. So because of the HTML structure, it does have set tags to use. But XML by itself has no set tags, you have to define your own.

Out of PHP and ASP, I'd suggest learning PHP. More hosts support it, so the chances of your host supporting PHP is greater than the chance of them supporting ASP.
Plus, ASP is almost absolate. ASP.NET however is different. ASP.NET is more powerful than regular ASP. But I'd still suggest you learn PHP.

Thanks, I checked this out and most of the programming language seems familiar, so it should be easy to pick up. Thanks for all of the help!
