website redirection assistance needed
I have a publically accessible website that I need to add a subdomain to. The subdomain would be to a internal resource on another server. It would look similar to this:

http://mydomain.com
http://subdomain.mydomain.com -----> redirects to 192.168.x.x on the internal network.

I've tried creating a website in IIS 5.0 that directs to a URL, specifically the 192.168.x.x but it doesnt resolve. I've also added a local web with a redirect to the 192.168.x.x address, which didnt work since the internal network is not visible to the outside (works internally).

Any suggestions on how to get this working? Thanks.

When your connected to the internet you will be given an IP address from your ISP (either dynamic or static). You can find this by visiting http://www.whatismyip.com/ - be aware that it may change each time you connect to the internet.

You then need to forward port 80 from your router/ICS box to the computer on your internal network which you wish to access.

This will then allow you to create a redirect to the IP you have from your ISP.

If you IP is dynamic (i.e. changes each time you connect) then you will need services such as www.dyndns.org

static
I have a static address, currently directed to my primary webserver aka:
http://mydomain.com

However, what I want is to use the same domain name and point it to a subdomain on another PC.
If the primary webserver is 192.168.1.2 and the router directs port 80 to this IP, I want to be able to have this webserver direct to another server with a seperate index.html file. It would be accessed by http://subdomain.mydomain.com or http://mydomain.com/subdomain

Under IIS - website - properties - home directory there is an option to redirect to a URL. This URL is set as the subdomain address. I can access it directly internally, but it doesnt resolve using the primary server.

You just those router ports open pointing to the subdomain box i.e. www.mydomain.com points to 192.168.0.2 where as the wan forwards all port 80 request to 192.168.0.2 . Now create a new forward or filter or virtual server whatever your router calls it, so that wan request for subdomain.mydomain.com are directed to 192.168.0.3

Obviously also dont forget to set the static ip and open port 80 on the computer running the subdomain so the router can find it.
