What kind of authentication/server are you looking for? You could set up a proxy server, a vpn server, just expose the intranet to the outside world through the firewall...lots of options.

Well the school currently has user name and password for all staff and students. I went all students and staff to be able to access the Intranet from home with the authentication

You would have to talk to the schools network admin to be able to set something like this up. It is their network you will be trying to let everyone into and I am sure they might have some interest.
