is there some sort of php or javascript that will stretch an image to several preset resolutions without making the image look like crap? i want to be able to make one master resolution and upload it to my site, then be able to let people choose their res and download a wallpaper to fit their screen, including widescreen (maybe have black or whatever bars on the sides of the image). any way to do this?

If you enable the GD library on your server, it will allow you to do dynamic image manipulation using PHP. More information: http://us3.php.net/gd. You're going to need to be familiar with PHP to pull this off - it won't be a simple program to write, but it's definitely possible.
