Solved: Beyond Copyright statements...effective protection for website photos?
Is there a way to prevent/disable the right-click functions for photos appearing in personal websites?

Friends have discovered, by accident, that photos from their website have been commandeered to *enhance* a disreputable page on a website.

Specifically, our friends breed and exhibit their dogs as do we, photos from their website were *lifted* and used, without knowledge or permission, in a (puppymill) website misrepresenting the quality of puppies listed for sale.

An *alt=* attribute stating that the photos are copyright (by the owner of the photo) certainly didn't slow them (thieving puppymillers) down.

Is there a way (html/xhtml code) to prevent further abuse, by somehow shielding pictures from being downloaded/saved?

Thanks for any suggestions.

yes there is some java butit so easy to get around - infact the image is downloaded into your temp files anyway

bottom line probably no - you can get some sort of flash software which is supposed to stop this - but i have read gere even that could be defeated - also a printscreen will do the job in most cases.....

you usually make th eimage poor quality so it cant be printed - but I guess to stop use in another website would need a water mark of something across the image

No you can't if you're trying to stop someone that knows what they are doing. If it can be seen it can be copied regardless of what you do. If you really want to proterct them put a watermark on them.

Havig said that you can stop the average user or make it hard for them. Disabling right click or other functions is one way but there is numerous ways to overcome that. Another solution is to slice the images into pieces and put it in a table to reconstruct it. Place it as a background image and place a transparent image over it.... There's a lot of tricks but in the end they will all fail if the person is determined or knows their stuff.

Thank you both for your opinions and the suggestions, using the table format or background with a transparent overlay just might be effective enough to discourage this sort of *theft*.

Odd.....I noticed two ads in the header here which appear more than coincidentally apropos to my post. One provides a link to Ebay with a promise of items related to Bichon Frise PUPPIES and the other is for an html encryption software product which will *disable right-click functions*. LOL!

Could Google be ogling my text?
