How to Tell if A Domain Name Company is OK ?
Hello, and thanks in advance,

There's a domain name I want to buy; and a broker for the name is a company called name.net

http://www.name.net

I can't find out any information about this company. Is it good, bad, honest? ... I'd like to know some things, before I send some money to them.

Can anyone suggest a method for finding out more about the company?

They are accredited by ICANN:
http://www.icann.org/registrars/accredited-list.html

I haven't found any reviews of them though. If you're registering a new domain name, you can do it through any of the registrars on that list.

This is a domain name that they are a broker for: the only way to get it is to go through them -- I can't use any other Registrar.

I'm still cautious ... No company address; no phone number; no "web presence" -- except a link on ICANN website -- how can they be so invisiible?

Thanks for your response ... RB

That is a bit odd, although the ICANN accreditation means they should be legitimate. You can always buy the domain they are brokering and then transfer it to another registrar.

That's a good point. ... I could transfer it after the purchase.

But I'm still reluctant to send money to them. ... I think that companies that do business on the web should provide information about themselves, and contact information.

Becoming an ICANN affiliated registrar needs a lot of money! They must have paid it. So I don't think they must be a run-by-night type of operators.

However, they have completely balnked out their whois information and their site doesn't inspire any confidence. IMO, its a risk. How important is the domain name to you? It all boils down to this.

As the poster said, the domain is brokered by name.net. Can't just go to GoDaddy and register it for the normal fee.
