Questions about writing a blog/social website
Hello friends,

I have this idea for a website but im not really sure how to get it going. Basically, the website will be a site where a user can sign up, fill out his/her profile, and have their own page. I guess it sounds like MySpace, lol. It really isn't though. I want a site where people post their own stories from whatever and then their friends (who they have accepted as friends or are connected with in their network) can read their stories, post a comment or two and then rank the story. Then, the rankings will be posted on the front of the page. I would like the profiles and social aspect of it be somewhat like MySpace or Friendster, but just not so satanic. If anyone can help me out by tossing some scripts, tutorials, lingo or whatever my way id be thrilled. Or if you really wanna make my day, IM me or email if youre an experienced programming. Hell i may pay you for the help.

Thanks.!

Use Drupal and then customize it a bit. It will save you a ton of time compared to writing a CMS from scratch.

However, if he is looking to make an originial site, a CMS won't cut it. You need to have original scripts, or atleast an original combination of scripts.

MySpace is basically a complex CMS. Not officially, but it is a content managment system. Lot's of content, individual pages, users posting/promoting stories = CMS.

He won't be able to use Drupal exactly as it's built - it will take some editing for it to have voting/promoting functions and anything else he wants, but it's better than starting from scratch.

Its not a problem to have a CMS. Its a problem to have a CMS freely available to the public when trying to make your site better than theirs.

That's why I suggest using Drupal as a simple base and then integrating original scripts to completely customize it to your own means. IMO I would prefer that to building something from scratch.
