Question Protecting the directories on my website.
I was just wondering how I can protect the directories on my website. I know there is an option in the control panel of my hosting company, but it seems a little wacked out and I'm a bit afraid to test it out.

I would also like to know how to block my FTP server from poping up to give a login name and password such as when I type in ftp://mysite.com it comes up and I want it not to some up, just incase someone were to guess it or try to hack it or something.

Are you running Apache? If so than use this tool:
http://www.tools.dynamicdrive.com/password/

And simply upload the required files as it says.
If you want to learn how to do it by hand or what's going on read this:
http://www.ilovejackdaniels.com/apac...th-htaccess/2/

As far as the FTP part, I think that might just be client side, but if it's not, I couldn't tell you how to do it.

Actually I'm just using the hosting for 1and1.com, so I'm not sure if the Apache thing will work.

Also is there a way to change what the page looks like when there is an error?

yes, but it also requires apache to my knowledge.

you use a .htaccess file to redirect from an error page to a custom page.

Yup, thanks covert

I'm going to give the apache thing a try in a sec, given that I have apache.

you must make a file named .htaccess

it is a file with no name and the htaccess extension

Alright, I think I have that on the ftp server.

See the hosting company "1and1" made a logs folder for teh web hosting so I can see my traffic and whatnot. The only thing is I believe that they already have that .htaccess file in there even though I already created the new one, but the new one is for the error messages. Am I supposed to modify that?

1&1 offers MS and Apache (Linux) hosting, but my guess is that you have Apache.

FYI, here is 1&1's FAQ entry on custom error pages:
http://faq.1and1.com/scripting_langu...taccess/2.html

You can usually learn how to do something by looking it up in their FAQs:

Well thank you for that, I didn't even realize 1and1 had those kid of faq's.
