Use of Subdomains and extra domains to increase google rank?
Hi,

Does anybody have any thoughts on the use of SubDomains and registering extra domain names to increase the google rank? ie, I have a restaurant web site, (eg www.ozrestaurant.com.au) and have been considering setting up another domain called www.mytownrestaurant.com.au to improve my rank. I have also been looking at doing a Sub Domain called restaurant.ozrestaurant.com.au.

Does anybody now if this sort of thing works? I have read a few sites that say yes, and some that say no...so any feedback here would be great!

If you want to have good google ratings on www.ozrestaurant.com.au, then having a different domain (or even subdomain) won't increase the ratings of www.ozrestaurant.com.au. It will just add more sites to the google index.

Let's say www.ozrestaurant.com.au had a google rating of 2 and all new sites google crawls starts out with 1 (just using these numbers for this example). Having www.ozrestaurant.com.au/restaurant will get better ratings than restaurant.ozrestaurant.com.au because www.ozrestaurant.com.au already had a rating of 2

Does any of this make sense?

Yeah, I think that makes sense. So if I want to improve my rank, I need to rename my pages with relevant names, such as myrestaurant.htm etc etc. Subdomains wont help.

Is it true that google places more relevance on domains with the actual search term in the name? So if somebody was to search google for "mytown restaurant" and my domain was www.mytownrestaurant.com.au it would be more effective? What Im getting at is, would it be an effective strategy to set up a new domain, which redirects to my domain, if I want to increase my traffic?

Well that's one of many factors google uses. Yes if your domain is, for example "pooh.com" and someone searches for "winnie the pooh" then there is a chance your site will show up as one of the results for the word "pooh"
