The basic foundation (think of a house) of any web site is HTML. So once you learn HTML and CSS... and you already know PHP, you'll be fine

If you want to be well rounded, you could also try ASP.NET* and Coldfusion.

*more people hire for ASP.NET knowledge than just regular ASP

I agree, HTML, CSS and PHP/ASP are the three big things you want to learn first.

There are some great tutorials over at W3 Schools.

If you know html than you know xhtml

I would practice making a bunch of static & dynamic websites for practice. it really helps.

Not exactly, although they are very similar.

In XHTML you can't just have, for example "Me & You" it has to be "Me &amp; You"

You'd need to know that, which you won't need to learn in HTML

That plus being "well formatted".

HTML can be a big mess if you want it to be and still validate.

I could have something like this and be valid:

<b>The cat in the <u>hat</b></u>
<div align=center><b>Sup yall</b></div>

If you check that with the w3 validator it won't be valid HTML 4.01

either way I was referring to knowing the tags & how to use them not the syntax

But it would be valid HTML 3.0 (you never said which version of HTML)

It is a known fact that whenever someone talks about something and doesn't specify it means the latest version.
