Solved: sloppy code sample, need css help

I like the effect. this is what im trying to do (as far as it looks), but there has to be another way, besides all of those "&nbsp" spaces. thanks for any ideas.

One quick thought is throw it into a nested table like so;

i'm of this school of thought that tables are no more thanks to xhtml/css specs.
