I guess would depend on what you want. Since you posted this in Web Development I am not sure if you want something that integrates into your Website or if you just want some StandAlone software. I personally use Trillian for Standalone software. It connects to all the major chat networks.

Trillan is only good if you buy the Pro version. Basic doesn't allow the Jabber protocol.

For 100% free Standalone chat software, my choice would be Gaim
