Visual Basic Express Help :)
Hi!

Im trying to write a program that checks for new email messages on a POP server. So far, all i can do is check if there is any messages, not just new ones.

Can anyone point me in the right direction as to check for new (not old) messages on the POP server? Im using VB.NET.

Thanks in advance.

Unless I am very much mistaken in POP3 you cannot distinguish between read and unread emails. If you have an email client that does so than that is generic and from within the client itself.

Example: Setup a POP3 account with your email client. Read some emails and leave others. Delete the account, set it up again, download the messages and they will all be unread.

Try the above with an IMAP4 account (hotmail, yahoo) and you will get different results.

Hope this helps.

Depending on how the POP3 client is set-up, once you download the messages the first time, they're deleted from the server.

What you suggested only works under 1 of 2 conditions. Either you use a web-based POP3 clients (webmail), OR your offline POP3 client has a feature to leave a copy of the messages on the server when downloading.

Some offline POP3 clients will not leave a copy on the server.

You can select the option: "Leave a copy of the message on the server" in most modern mail programs.
