Entry page......question
What is the advantage/why is it used?

A simple page with little information concerning the site and requires you to click on through, such as: http://www.theglenholmeschool.org/

Any ideas why?

The strategy is for the owner to compose a (hopefully) brief 'Splash Page' to get your attention of their logo or specialization in a certain area. If the visitor has to click on a button that forwards them to the next page, then that would be time consuming. If you happen to include this in your web based design, please include a redirect page after a few seconds as this will not annoy visitors too badly.
I hope that this helps.

Also sometimes it is used as a way to alert users to what kind of specification are requred by the site.

Can be used a content advisory to prevent people entering the site and it turning out to be pornography not a band. (yeah yeah been there done that).

Also some sites use it as a quick bit of prelim advertising. Such as www.korn.com where the user is shown an advert fo their new album before being able to commence to the main site.

I would avoid using a splash page if possible if you want the best possible search engine ranking.

The content on your index page is generally treated as the most important by search engines. A splash page doesn't have much in the way of content, so doesn't look so good to a search engine. This is OK if the page redirects to a different domain's index page, as this will be searchable in it's own right, but I'd avoid redirecting to another page on the site or a subdomain.

Just something worth considering

Another purpose it serves, though, is similar to the 'landing area' in store. That theory says that shoppers need ten or fifteen feet of relatively empty space to adjust to being in the store and focus on shopping.

The splash page allows the user to get ready for the experience. It adds an element of intrigue, kinda. lol.
