what's wrong with my pc?
ok this might sound like a pc related question. but not really.

i have just found out, that my pages show up VERY diffrently for me than they do to pretty much everyone i know. and as a web developer, this is NOT a good thing. and i cannot for the life of me figure out how to see things there way.

i have 4 browsers. and none of them show me how messed up my site is compared to the people i ask who tell me certain page elements are not in the correct places.

to me. everything looks perfect. FF, IE6, Avant, Opera

but for others, no matter what they use, things are messed up. what on earth can it be? i thought browsers had everything to do with it but in this case it seems not.

any ideas? i've never been faced with this before. assuming my code really was off, why would my browsers display it more correctly than anyone elses? is there a setting i can turn on to say "be more strict" or something? >.<

and the wierd thing is. everything was perfect before i decided to change some ID's into Classes. I had to turn them into classes for another page that was gonna borrow a lot of the same styles. i even tried reverting and going back to ID's and it's still messed up. (but remember, i'm only going based on what people tell me since to me, it all looks fine)

hoping someone can help me out. this is just too wierd. makes no sense.

thank you.

at the moment i can't really because i found workarounds for the problmes i was having. but i can describe them if tha'ts ok. oh and i also made a thread about ONE of the particular problems actually.

http://forums.techguy.org/web-develo...g-problem.html

that's the thread where i was asking for help alginign something. but that screenshot that is in there HAD to be provided to me from someone else because i wasn't getting that at all! O_o for me, the alignment was perfect. for everyone else...to the right.

since this was the first time it happend i dind't pay it too much mind. but it happend AGAIN today in a diffrent part of the site. this time, it had to do with the width of a div and how for others, it would be too long and go to the next line, while for me, it stayed in the same line to the right of another div. the possible causes don't even help either.

all i did was change ID's into classes so how on earth could that ruin it all of a sudden? i ended up using a crappy workaround. i'm not happy. moreso cause i can't understand why i don't get the problems no matter what browser i use.

i'm just stumped

Hi Tact,
It's not just browsers you have to worry about. It's browser versions, resolution settings, monitor size, window size, font size, etc. You don't have any way of knowing what your audience will be using so you can't just code for what looks right for you. To test for different environments, always make sure to do things like resize your windows and increase and decrease your font settings to get an idea of what happens. When you have other people test for you and it looks different, find out what browser version they're using and what all of their settings are. That might help you start to figure out what's going on.

thank you wendy. that really makes me feel better because at least now, i have a nice list of things to look out for.

normally i do shrink down my windows by grabbing them at the corner and moving them back and forth. but i had no idea resolution could really affect it. but i did try it yesterday and it didn't help.

i think my real main concersn are gonna be browser versions, font size, and window size in that order. so i'll keep an eye out if it ever happens next time. tyvm for your help.
