It's called a Favicon.

On *most* servers, you can just upload a file called favicon.ico to the root directory, and that's all you have to do.

On other servers, which I like to call "crappy servers", you have to add this between <head> and </head>

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico">

I guess I would like to know how to configure Apache or IIS for my users to load the Favicon without them doing any HTML. I have never heard of doing it any other way beside html.

On the server I admin with Apache as the web server, I often see hits on "www.website.com/favicon.ico" in the various website logs and Apache returns 404 codes since that file usually doesn't exist. If someone uploaded a "favicon.ico" to the root directory of their website (their "DocumentRoot" in Apache parlance), then Apache would serve up the file, no HTML coding required.

Peace...

That is correct thing. Apachi treat the favicon.ico file as site icon. But some browsers looks for the HTML tags. So it is better to add the tad on every pages of your site.
