Web-host recommendation
Could someone please recommend a professional "straight up" web-host, tied of searching only to find companies that are built on a shoe string budget or riddled with gimmicks.

Cheers

Hi terrano,

Depends on what you are looking for. Will your site be having 'heavy' usage, and require a lot of bandwidth?

And will you be needing a lot of storage space?

All hosts vary, so that information can be inportant to point you in the right direction.

Regards,
Anthony

have always used Catalyst2 who provide windows or linux and an excellent cpanel integration.

Prices are fair and support is top notch!

i can tel you who not to go with:

webhost4life.com (always massive lag on loading and its never there fault :/ )
godaddy.com (there company policy is horrible they dont specify what % of shared SQL CPU and memory usage you can use but its 1/1/1 foudn that out the hard way. There customer service is also bad.)

on the other hand:
1and1.com (they have a good cpanel compared to the other big names good customer service but sometimes they have lag here and there.)

I just hosted a site on HostGator and I simply CAN NOT believe how much disk space and bandwidth we're getting and for the great price! We've using the "hatchling" plan and it's WAY MORE than enough for what we need.

The site has been up for only a few days now so we'll see how it goes over time.

Peace...

I just started using downtownhost.com for hosting, 10 bucks a month for 7 gigs of space and 250 gigs a month transfer. I'm hosting 4 of my sites on the same account with no issues. I read alot of review sites before going with them... Called them 3 times with questions, on the phone no less and had someone right away.

Previous to this was asmallorange.com, terrible, just terrible...

I definitely agree with Fyzbo on ICDSoft. But, whatever you do, don't use Globat.com. They will offer you the world but their servers are slow as molassis.

I hosted with ICDSoft for years before switching to windows hosting this summer. I was actually given the company name as a recommendation on this forum.

Yep, ICDSoft's customer support is top notch. Although they don't give you a phone number to contact them at, their online support is second to none. They say they guarantee a response within an hour, but most of the time, they respond within 10 minutes!!! The online drawback is that they don't allow you to have SSH access. But I've been with them since 2002.
