Question Solved: domain/web hosting question
I joined bravenet and built a website for my stepfather's business. The only problem so far is that he wants a url that has says this: (his company name).com and the url to the site I made has (his company name).bravehost.com . After searching around, I found a spot that lets you buy domain and after checking...I was able to register to have a website named (his company name).com

ok..thats done and I now have a domain for his business. But the website I built has a different address and cant figure out how to change the address to reflect the business address without having the bravehost name in it.

What exactly is a domain good for anyways? I thought I was paying to have a personalized URL that he will be able to use in his advertisements but that doesnt seem to be the case (unless you can use that address and I just dont know how to do it) When I go to the spot to manage my domain, there is a place that says "build your website". When I click on that, the page opens up to edit the bravehost url that I already built.

Once again...my problem is that the website is all published and ready to be advertised through my stepfathers business but he wants his own url to reflect the business title alone and without the bravehost name attached to it. I paid to register a domain under the business name and would like the url of the site I built to reflect just the business name alone but now i'm not sure if it can be done.

Am I misunderstanding what a domain is? It doesnt seem to have much purpose to me, a layperson.

Web Hosting
I am not as familiar with Bravenet as i am with other hosting providers, but surely there is a way to use the domain name that you have purchased. I looked at the sample control panel on Bravenet's site and I found a menu item that says "Add an external name from another registrar to use with your hosting." This sounds like the place you need to go. See if you can find that in the area you go to to manage your domain. Also, I believe with Bravenet, there are diferent levels of hosting. They have FREE hosting plans, and premium hosting plans. If you are using the FREE plan, you probably cannot use the domain name you purchased. You would have to upgrade to the premium plan.

If you still cannot figure this out your best bet will be to call Bravent directly. A technician should be able to walk you through this.

You could always go to the domain that you purchased and put a few lines of code there to redirect to the bravenet site.

<HEAD>
<meta HTTP-EQUIV="REFRESH" content="0; url=http://www.yourdomain.bravenet.com/index.html">
</HEAD>

If you put this code on the main page of the domain you purchased then when they entered that domain name into the browser it would automatically redirect to your bravenet site. I think that's what you're looking for.

I will also say that when that redirect occurs, the url in the address bar of the broswer will also change to your bravenet one. However, your site will still be able to be accessed via the yourcompanyname.com which is what you were initially looking for. If you desire the domain name to stay when it redirects, this solution will not work and a more complicated one is in order. Sorry for not mentioning this above.

Web Hosting
Yes that would work, but then he would need to pay for 2 web hosting accounts. One at Bravenet and 1 with the other provider where the HTML redirect will go.

I will go and try these options fellas, thanks a bunch. And I forgot to mention...the domain I purchased was through Bravenet and not some other provider so I assumed it would be no problem using their free service and the domain together.
