Domain Name Confusion
Hi Guys

The company I work for provides internet service. I asked today and they said they would host a website for me for free.

I'm not sure how to go about getting a domain name. Through work I can get one for about $20. But some of the other sites offer them as low as $8.88 (godaddy.com, namecheap.com).

When you get a domain name through these companies, how do I get it onto the servers here at work? I've got the dns server names, do you simply assign the name to the servers when you sign up for it, or are you stuck using the site where you bought the name?

Thanks.

Lymponus

If you register your domain through a company that does NOT provide DNS services, your company's DNS admin will assign your domain an IP address and define the domain to your company's DNS. If I were you, I would register the domain with a company that DOES provide DNS services. Then you ask your company for the IP address that will be used for your domain name and let the external DNS serve it. That way, if you leave your company your domain name won't be 'tied' to them.

Peace...
