Solved: Website online offline indication
What I am looking to do, is have an indicator that can change depending on the status. I have a site, madd74.com, and I have a static IP address to my computer. I want to link to some files on my computer, since they are way too large to have on my hosting service (a lot of videos of my new baby). So, I would like to go the way of having something indicate that the external part of my site (my home computer) is offline, since many times it goes that way

Thanks!

You could use a server side script to ping your local computer. What server side technologies does your hosting support? Also what OS is your home computer running, are you hosting the content with IIS/Apache/etc.?

XP, would be Apache based. I am not sure of everything my host supports, even though I know they allow CGI, perl, and MySQL (of which the last is not very reliable). I was not looking for anything fancy... I actually wanted it to point to an icon, one if it was on-line and another if it was offline. I would imagine a simple php script would do the job for this.

You could definitely use a php script for this. You can either write the php to ping your server or request a small file from your server, either way if it gets a positive response display your on-line icon.

You may want to check out: http://jquery.com/plugins/project/linkchecker

It uses php and ajax to change the class of a link if the server responds appropriately. It uses jquery which is a small and excellent javascript framework.

Well, I will give that a shot and hope that does what I am looking for. I am at work, so not able to open .rar files at the moment. From the looks of the example I saw, it works with class, so I would imagine it would work on the principle of .css, so maybe something like this can be used instead of background link colors?

<style type="text/css">
active {image: active}
inactive {image: inactive}
</style>

Actually, I *think* I have found what I am looking for... when I check it out, I will report on the script

http://www.schwebdesigns.com/serverstatus/

haha, it is crazy, the first time I did a search online, I kept getting AIM and ICQ things... because I said "status" and "icon"... this time I did "online server status"

YAY!! It worked, here is the test... and yeah, I added that last one to do a compare

http://madd74.com/status/test.html

I consider this, SOLVED!! Thank very much for the help, by the way, oddly, had I not gone there I would not have figured out to use the different search keywords, so thanks again!
