Security question: storing decimals in separate field in database?
We recently hired a new CTSO for our office, and he drew up a list of "recommended programming methods" regarding Input Filtering for Web Applications (i.e. filtering user input that is provided via a web form before placing it in a database).

One of the recommendations is that in the case of number:

Quote:
If a decimal number is required, the input fields for the main number and the decimal places should be separated and the decimal mark (period character) placed programmatically.
In other words, if you ask someone their GPA in a form field, and they type 3.25, the recommendation is to store the "3" in one database field and the "25" in a second database field.

Is this standard practice? I can't figure out the reasoning for this recommendation. Any thoughts?

You know what? I just re-read that statement, and I didn't catch it until now. The recommendation is regarding INPUT fields, not database fields.

Nevermind. Guess I had to type it out myself to catch that.
