websites
Hi all, I was wondering if someone could explain things better to me about creating websites. I was here before asking questions and got some good help. But I'm still confused...here's what I want to do. I would like my own website so I can sell my photos and make a profit (hopefully). But I'm not sure if I should create my own web site and learn everything or buy a used site already made and tweek it to the way I like. But there's so much to learn about the HTML and getting a domain name and other stuff, I'm confused. Would it be easier to buy a used site or create one? I don't want to have to pay someone a monthly fee to have a website. I just want to make a few bucks on the side. If I buy a domain name who get's the money from that? There's to many questions and to many websites. I've been to the web site called www.xyzgames.co.uk/index.php and started to read the information there. But there's alot. I would like something simple. Is that possible? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Genevive

genevive,
were you planning to sell your photos online using paypal? learning html can be difficult, especially if you are new to it and want to add features like a shopping cart or purchasing program.

A good friend of mine sells artwork online, using Yahoo.com. they provide business options for decent cost, i believe 12$/month, and have set templates and easy editing tools for you to use.
http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/webhosting/home2.php?

however, you can sometimes buy a domain for about 10$ a year and set up the site yourself. also, do you have an html editing program, or were you planning on using notepad to write the code yourself?

I don't have anything. I'm brand new to all of this. I don't have a html editing program. The one web site I was at said I could use notepad, dreamweaver, or frontline. And said one of them was harder to use or something like that. How do you know where to buy a domain name. There's so many sites that offer to sell you one. Genevive

domains
you can buy domains from www.godaddy.com for <4$ a month, or

at www.doteasy.com you can buy a domain for about $25 a year. there are many others but these two are very popular (godaddy.com being most popular)

editing
for editing, i use dreamweaver. i have found it is very convenient. i believe adobe has a trail version you can download here for free..

http://www.adobe.com/products/dreamw...?promoid=BPDEC

or, if you follow online tutorials on making pages, notepad is always the cheapest (as it comes with your computer's operating system)

for .coms and .orgs you'll want

$8.99 per year :-)

It's silly to think that you will learn html to the point that you will efficiently develop your own site that is attractive enough to pull in customers. You could do it, of course, if your goal is to learn html (or more practically, a scripting language to process orders, etc.).

What you *really* need is something that is much easier. I recommend grabbing a domain name using one of the services mentioned already, finding a host for the site, and then using a pre-packaged (and free!) software to do what you want. Try gallery at http://gallery.menalto.com/. It's just what you are looking for!
