Access times
HI all new to the forum.

Ok here is my question. We host around 40 websites that have hundreds of pictures. I have 60gigs dedicated to pictures alone. since we are getting more clients I want to get a bigger hard drive just for the pictures. Since my boss is obssesed with user access times, as in users accessing the pictures on the web on their end, he thinks getting a bigger hard drive will slow down the server and hence slow down access time serving out the pictures to end users. I guess what I'm saying is does a bigger hard drive slow down a website?

Let me know if you need clarification I wasn't sure how to word this hehe.

THanks in advanced.

Be sure to get a fast hard drive or maybe go with a RAID to keep performance up. What size disk are considering getting?

Peace...

HI thanks for the reply
Well right now the sites are hosted on a Dell poweredge server with raid. I want to get another drive thats around 150gig or so thats dedicated only to media. Would that size of the hard drive slow access times down? We average around 100 hits an hour.

Nope, if you notice slowing down it would be your servers cache or the internet connection not the hardrives fault.

You could easily double that drive size with no impact on time.

I concur, sir!

If you do get a 150GB drive, get one with a fast RPM speed so the server won't have to wait for the drive to keep up.

Will this drive replace the current 60GB or will it supplement it? Will it be installed internally or via USB or Firewire connections?

Peace...
