On-line editor
I need an editor that I can use to modify - online - plain text documents that are located on my webserver.

I just need a simple text editor that will connect to my server, authenticate, and allow me to open, modify & save files.

The alternative - which I have done for years - is to FTP a file to my local machine, edit & save it, then FTP it back up to the server.

Does anyone know of one that fits the bill? Is there an extension for FireFox (or any other browser?) that can do this?

FOSS preferred.

How about FCKeditor or HTMLArea?

Peace...

The problem with both FCKeditor or HTMLArea (complex sets of scripts) is that I'd still have to roll my own application built around those scripts, and including authentication on the site where the files area.

I tried Contribute and discovered that if Contribute can edit HTML/PHP, Adobe is keeping that feature well-hidden.

Just about every blogging system has a built-in online editor (some of which look suspiciously like HTMLArea and FCKeditor).

OTOH, I haven't found a pre-built one that does the job - editing on-line but NOT part of a blog. Until....

I was poking around in the various resources available through my web hosting service. They had 3 different ready-to-go ways that I could accomplish the task of online editing, compete with authentication, etc. I could also easily FTP the edited files to my local machine (not that I'd want to do so).

Now the dilemma: if I mark the problem solved, then we won't get any more answers. There may be a gem in those yet-to-be received answers. My immediate problem is solved, but a long-term solution that doesn't require me to re-invent the wheel would be nice.

So, for now, the problem is NOT solved.

Would you need an actual "application" or a page onto which you would load the editor? That page could then be password protected through the web server's authentication capabilities.

Which apps does your web host provide?

Peace...

BlueHost.com provides (for the current topic) 2-3 file managers, and each of those has 2-3 editors (there may be some overlap).

Either would do. As for loading the editor into a page, my experience has been that when using canned code, the hard part of the project is all the little gotchas. It's the old story about trying to drain the swamp, but finding yourself up to your *** in alligators.

I don't think installation or configuration would be an issue for you. However, the fact that FCKeditor (and probably HTMLArea too) doesn't provide a "File/Open" function, this kind of solution wouldn't be viable.

Peace...
