Is a redirection necessary within the same website?
Hi there

I have just joined this site, after reading for a few months and being impressed by how quickly you all help people, especially in the HJT/malware forum.

I wanted to check that I don't need to do anything. I'd be grateful for any confirmation/suggestions of action.

I have a dedicated server. On it is a .co.uk site which is redirected in plesk to the other domain on the site, www.alltopbooks.com. This correctly shows as a 301 when you read the headers.

.com is an x-cart site (bookshop). If you type in the .com address it sends you to the home page, which is .com/home.php.

I checked the server headers for www.alltopbooks.com, and it shows as a 302 rather than a 301 to /home.php.

Does it matter that it is not a 301 given that it is pointing within the same domain? I know the search engines usually prefer 301s, but is that from one domain to another or even to within the same domain?

If it matters, then I don't see that Plesk allows you to do a forward to a page within the same domain. Is there something else I should do, e.g. htaccess?

Hopefully it won't matter as it's not outside the domain, but I just want to check!

Thanks for any help you can offer.

somewhat off-topic question: why not just make the main page "index.php", that way you don't have to redirect? Is there a reason you have it as "home.php"? If you renamed it to "index.php" then you wouldn't even need to see it in the url, making the address prettier

Thanks for your comment.

No, it is just the way the site was set up by my web design/hosting company. I was assuming that was the way x-cart created sites normally worked.

Thanks

Dilip
