If you have the budget, Adobe Dreamweaver is the best web production software out there.

Otherwise, there are many free alternatives (all better than FrontPage). I would recommend KompoZer. If you're looking for something a bit more advanced but don't want to spend as much as Dreamweaver, you could take a look at Microsoft Expression Web (the successor to FrontPage).

Tables are easy to work with in FP
But if you are wanting to try something else....I second Kompozer

I agree about DW but it is expensive, you can get M$ Visual Web Developer Express as a free download from the M$ site and this is far better than FP in that at least it doesn't write bloated code. Have a look around the free web template sites find one that has the layout that you want and then use that as the basis for your site.

About 2 years ago, I started to handwrite my own CSS and use various CMS.

-- I'll never go back to desktop software. It's so basic and Mickey Mouse by comparision.

Well, yes, you need to know how to write everything you're working with to really use it properly. I write all my own CSS, PHP, JavaScript, and most of my HTML (I let Dreamweaver create the rest just to speed things up). To be honest, I use it more like an IDE code editor than a WYSIWYG editor. As far as CMS's go, they're only really applicable to large sites. If I want to create a small static site, a CMS is overkill.

That's a great way of putting it.

I tend to use Kompozer (on Linux or Windows) to create "foundation" and I fine tune and tweak manually.

Peace...

Not really, not with the built in SEO, and idiot-proof editor for end users.

Notepad++ works for a good code editor.
