Solved: customizing a flash template
Hello everyone!

It's nice to be visiting tech support guy for something other than a nasty virus for a change! This time around I'm looking into revamping my website which has been the same for about 10 years now. I've been scowering the internet the last couple days for a flash template I like, I'm a musician so I need something with multimedia capability. I've found some really nice ones at reasonable prices, some a little pricey, but it seems like every one I look at there's some little thing I don't really like. For example, alot of them are video ready, but the players are static, small windows in the middle of the page with no apparent "full screen" capability or even enlargement capability. Another one I really like, the player fills the browser but has no controls at the base of the window, ie, stop, play/pause, etc. Instead it has a semi transparent play/pause icon that sits in the middle of the screen the whole time.

Sorry for being so long winded, my question is, how difficult will it be for a person with little or no knowledge or skill to customize one of these templates? For example, how difficult would it be to install a different video player to the template? I have adobe flash cs4 and adobe dreamweaver cs4 and fireworks 8. Unfortuantely most of these template sellers don't have much in the way of tech support so I'm anticipating I'll be on my own once I buy one.

Any advice or feedback welcome, cheers all!
Kenny

It's going to be hard if you don't know ActionScript. Flash video in particular could get a bit tricky. Have you considered using a static HTML/CSS website with an embedded Flash video player like JW Player?

that player looks nice, that would probably do the trick. But will it really be that difficult replacing whatever video player comes with the template with that one?

It would be pretty difficult to replace it into a Flash template. But it would be extremely easy if you used static HTML/CSS with no Flash for your template (this drastically improves SEO as well - Flash sites are generally frowned upon these days).

If you still want to use a Flash template, you're probably going to have to dig in and learn a bit about ActionScript and Flash video in order to customize it. Some template companies offer full support, so they may be able to just do it for you.
