uploading edits to server mystery
I have a mystery that's driving me crazy!!! Very frequently when I make an edit to a web page and upload the edited version to my hosts server, when I go to view it online the old version displays. I've tried deleting my temporary internet files, and the most perplexing thing, say for example the edit was to an image, and when I go to view it the old image displays. I've tried going physically to the remote view and deleting the image, and reuploading the new version and STILL the old one displays online!! So then I tried simply deleting the file completely from the remote server, and deleting my temporary internet files locally, and lo and behold the old image continues to display!! Where on earth is it coming from? I've deleted it on my hosts server yet it still displays.

This problem is frustrating me from head to toe, and if anyone can help me resolve it once and for all I will be eternally grateful.

thanks,
Kenny

Your ISP or host is doing some caching along the way. Check your site with a proxy and if the proxy sees the image then it's probably your host.

So if it's my host or ISP is there anything I can do to rectify it? How can I over ride their cache?

Depending on the website host, you *might* be able to add some Cache Control directives to tell caches not to cache your website files. The downside of this is *any* cache that obeys the directives won't cache your content either. This means more traffic will be directed to your server which might result in higher bandwidth usage by your site. If your site is hosted on an Apache web server, you can see if the "ExpiresByType" directive can help you gain some control over what your ISP caches.

Additionally, you should contact ISP and see if they do any content caching on their side.

Peace...

And like tomdkat said, if it's your host then you should talk to them.
