domain and sub-domain: how to
hallo,

background: looking at cheap webhosting sites. it says: 1 domain unlimited sub-domains.

here's what i need to do: am applying for a job as a teacher or a driver. i have a mydomain-name.com. when applying for a driver's job i want to give prospective employer a url that will direct him to a one-page cv as a driver. will this work: www.mydomain-name.com/driver driver being the file containing my cv as a driver.
same goes for teacher, etc. i want to keep them separate as i dont want either prospective employer to know i can do more than one job.

basic problem being i dont understand what a sub-domain is let alone how it works.

some help appreciated.

Sub-domains would be more along the line of having URLs of:

driver.mydomain-name.com
teacher.mydomain-name.com

They would work off of your existing registered mydomain-name.com domain name and not require any further registration.

The www.mydomain-name.com/driver and www.mydomain-name.com/teacher URLs would would also work for your needs. Depending on how your hosting service has the servers configured, both driver.mydomain-name.com and www.mydomain-name.com/driver could both use the same set of files in the same location on the server.

hallo cwwozniak,

thanks, youve put my mind at rest at buying the cheaper starter pack and in knowing it will work.
My webpages are under construction using Bluevoda's free software - seems to be perfect for newbies like me - so it may take a couple of weeks to bring to fruition but thanks again for your help, much appreciated.

Hi Karaman,

You're welcome.

You do need to check with the hosting company about how you need to organize the sub-directories for your domain name in order for the sub-domains names to work. You also need to make sure you use the the correct default home page file name that your hosting company expects when visitor uses a URL for a given sub-domain that does not include a file name.

A suggestion if you want to make it less obvious that you may have multiple versions of your CV for different occupations; instead of using sub-domain names like teacher and driver, maybe use yourlastnamecv and mycurriculumvitae.
