Solved: pdf files crashing my internet connection
I don't know if this is a virus? I have AVG running and protecting my computer!

I am using windows xp and ie7. Adobe reader X.

Every time I try to load a PDF I get the PDF page and progress bar for about 3 seconds (and the progress line). Then the internet connection shuts down and puts me back on my default screen as if I have clicked the close button?
This happens even if I have a few internet connections opened in tabs.
I have tried it over a long period of time and with many PDF files from many websites - always the same result.
I get round it by remembering where the file is, getting my laptop out and opening it with that. The laptop uses windows 7 and firefox.
Does anyone have any idea what this could be?
Thanks,
Bob.

Hi. What browser are you using when the problem occurs? ^^ I think the people here can help you if we know that too. It looks like you have the latest version of Adobe Reader, so it might be the browser.

Is Internet explorer 7 the browser?

See if the problem clears up if you uninstall Adobe Reader, reboot, download and reinstall Adobe Reader.

Thanks for the reply.
I uninstalled the adobe using control panel/add or remove hardware.
There was also adobe flash player 10 plug in and adobe flash player 11 activeX,
I removed them as well.
I then shut down and restarted the computer, went to the adobe site and downloaded reader X (10.1.3).
Then I went looking for a PDF to load, whilst doing this I got a message that adobe wanted to download activeX, I accepted this but saw nothing more of it, the readerX has shown up on my installed files but nothing else?
I found a PDF, I use a lot of electronic data sheets so I got one of them. I tried with a few others.

There was no change, I still see the progress bar for a few seconds then the explorer closes down.

The only other idea I have is to try an IE Reset.

THanks,
I have read through the link and could do that but before I do - would you recommend upping to IE8?
When I do a reset would I lose my favorites and if so is there any way of backing them up before hand?
Bob

Sure. I think that it is supposed to have fewer security holes.

Hi,
I have upped to IE8, at least I think I have. The only difference I see is all the letters are larger? Maybe I altered to a smaller font sometime in the past! (added :- the page was zoomed to 125%, I have brought it to 100% and the font size is back)

I am now able to load and read PDF files.

There is a yellow line keeps appearing at the top of the page :-

internet explorer is currently running with add-ons disabled. click here to manage, disable, or remove your add ons.

sometimes it appears with an annoying noise. if I close it it just reappears when I do something.
If I open it it shows a list of items that I know little about.
Can I stop it?
Thanks,
Bob.

Add ons are things that can either make your browsing experience better or not. The reason why it keeps appearing is because some of the add-ons needed updating too (or some doesn't really work well with 8) I hope you don't mind, try grabbing a screenshot of those list of items you saw, so that the people here in the forums will be able to help you.
