Question Solved: IE8 Not Recognized?
I'm running WinXP home w/SP3. When I start IE8 and hit Help - About Internet Explorer, it says that it is IE8. Yet the OK and the System Info buttons do not work - nothing happens when you click on them. I find this curious. Also, when accessing Youtube, it tells me that I'm running IE7. Who is right? Is IE8 installed but not working properly? Any suggestions on what to do about it?

Then you're running Internet Explorer 8.

Have you tried re-downloading and installing IE8?

I did try to uninstall IE8, intending to reinstall it.
Got the blue screen.

The buttons are on the window that tells says it is IE8.

There is a complicated process to uninstalling Internet Explorer as it's part of Windows.

Go to Microsoft's website and download it again, if it allows you.

To take a screenshot,

1- Hit the Printscreen key on your keyboard. This will copy your entire screen to the clipboard. Hitting ALT + Printscreen will only copy the active window.

2- Open Paint (click Start > Run > type mspaint and click OK)

3- Select Edit.

4- Click on Paste.

5- Select File.

6- Click on Save As...

7- Save your screenshot as a JPEG file.

8- Attach the screenshot to your next post.

The exact same thing is happening to me! I'm running IE8 (Windows XP), and have been for a long time. Suddenly one web site (that I've visited okay in the past) says that I'm running IE7. I've uninstalled and reinstalled IE8, made sure that the compatibility setting is off, and restarted my computer - with no success . . . .

I looked at the Microsoft site, and according to what I read, I should be able to use add/remove to uninstall it - I had SP3 before IE8.
It was what I used and while it was processing it - I got the blue screen and then it automatically rebooted.

Have you tried uninstalling it using Add or Remove Programs since the BSOD?

No, but nothing has changed.
Why would it be any different now?
The BSOD was so fast that I didn't catch what the problem was before it rebooted.

Disable Automatic Restart on System Failure and try uninstalling it again.

If you're successful, try installing IE8 again.

If it BSODs, write down the STOP code and post it in your next reply.

That error is normally associated with a driver.

Try booting into Safe Mode then uninstalling Internet Explorer 8.

Sorry for the delay in responding, I haven't been able to work on my PC lately.
Anyway I will try to uninstall IE8 in Safe Mode on Sunday,

Two questions:
Should I install it in Windows XP and if that doesn't work, install it in Safe Mode?
Now that I've disabled Auto Restart, is there another way to manually restart when I get the BSOD? I've been hitting the power button - nothing else seemed to work.

Safe Mode is in Windows XP, it's just a diagnostic version of Windows XP that's very limited. You should try it as you've suggested, though you'll need to be in Safe Mode With Networking to get an internet connection.

And the power button is fine to manually restart after a BSOD.

No change
I went all the steps - no error messages or BSOD received.

The IE8 screen w/the buttons is exactly the same.
YouTube still says IE7 detected.
Any suggestions?

As a side note, I don't know if this is totally unrelated:
In Win Explorer, the text for the search feature does not display.
Should I open another thread on this forum?

You installed IE8 in Safe Mode With Networking and you're getting the same thing?
